Micro Connectors USB A Male to PS/2 Female Adapter Review

Micro Connectors USB A Male to PS/2 Female Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In reference to a previous review: OK, granted it's cheap, but it does *not* work. There is a working alternative, though: see later in this review.

My goal was to use an EluminX keyboard (a backlit unit available at a good price from Amazon) with my Playstation2, for use in chatting during Everquest Online Adventure sessions. Previously, I was using an old Gateway USB keyboard, and turning a desk lamp on when I wanted to say something-- not too handy!

For reasons that are shrouded in mystery, the company responsible for the EluminX chose a crusty old IBM-PC interface called PS/2. (And you can imagine the confusion when I asked sales clerks for a device to use a PS/2 keyboard on a PS2.) It's a Mini-DIN similar to the serial connector of an old Macintosh. No problem, though; all you need is a converter-- right?

But not this one.

When connected, the keyboard started glowing, showing that there was power to the device. But, I couldn't type a word. Trying it on a couple of USB-equipped Macs and a Windows computer, the results were the same-- light but no type. Plugging it into the Windows box's PS/2 port showed that the keyboard was, in fact, working.

Not counting those abortions that have dedicated sound volume knobs, or eMail, Web, and other keys, keyboards are as standard as AA batteries. If the Micro Connectors device doesn't translate that, how can it translate something more complex? Sure, I may have got a bum unit, but based on what most of the others here are saying I would consider this to be a waste of seven dollars.

But lo! there is hope! I bought a Radio Shack PS/2 to USB Adapter, part number 26-226. It cost about $13. It worked perfectly in all three places, and now I'm happily chatting while slaying monsters.

Buy the EluminX from Amazon, but buy your converter from Radio Shack.

You will not receive the product advertised. You will receive a non-OEM knock off, made by some company called GT Max, without any software needed to use all the functions of the device. The software from Bluesoleil will set you back another $30-$40...better to buy the Zoom Telephonics 4314 USB BT adapter here on Amazon for just $22. It works right out of the box, this device might be found by your operating system, I use XP Pro SP3, but that is as far as it goes, to get the added VoIP and other functions, like BT Stereo Audio, you need to BUY the software and even then it may or may not work.
I suggest avoiding this seller at all costs. If this were the Avantalk BTDG-20 as advertised it would have included the software.

Work on the go with Bluetooth! The super compact design of this micro Bluetooth dongle makes it truely portable. With an exterior shell that measures only 9x10.6x5mm, it's perfect for your laptop or notebook! Transfer files between your computer and any Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as cell phones, PDAs, printers, headsets, and more. Create on-the-fly networks between two computers w/ Bluetooth. This simple USB adapter acts as an antenna for your computer, giving it Bluetooth capability. This bluetooth dongle comes with a full version of BlueSoleil software and drivers. However, the software is not licensed to every type and model of hardware that is capable of using Bluetooth. If the software detects hardware that does not match the license keys it expects, then the software will impose a 5MB data transfer limitation. To overcome that limitation, users must purchase a different version of BlueSoleil software separately. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Average Reviews:

I looked at a zillion of these Bluetooth adapters, wanting to add BT to my wife's PC to sync her BlackBerry, and I saw this one consistently reviewed among the best on every site that sold it.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, the installation could not have been easier, I simply enabled the BT services in Win7, then plugged it into a USB port, and Win7 did the rest. The whole deal took less than 1 minute.
What attracted me to this adapter was it seemed to work farther away than most of the other adapters, according to others who had purchased several different ones.
The cool part is now my wife can sync her BlackBerry with her Outlook calendar - when her computer is upstairs in her office, and her BlackBerry is downstairs in the kitchen in her purse !!
Highly recommend this adapter, I'll be getting more for my other computers.

Cisco-Linksys USBBT100 Bluetooth USB Adapter Review

Cisco-Linksys USBBT100 Bluetooth USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you own a bluetooth enabled phone, this is a MUST-HAVE accessory! I've owned this for two weeks and here's my experience w/it so far.
Installation was a snap! I am using Windows XP SP1. I downloaded the latest drivers from Linksys website and during the install process, it prompted me to plug in the dongle, then it finished and was up and working! That easy! I've read about others having driver problems w/other lesser name brands (Belkin, etc) but Linksys truly does live up to its name. I've also installed drivers on my laptop so I now have a Bluetooth enabled laptop also! It's easy switching the dongle from desktop to laptop because of the USB connector. Pairing w/my Sony Ericsson T610, I now have wireless internet access on my laptop anywhere I can get a signal on my cell phone!
Syncing w/Outlook is much faster than through IRDA and sending pictures/ringtones/games to and from the phone is a lot more convenient too because it doesn't require line of sight the way IRDA does.
The specs claim 100m but you've gotta remember that's unobstructed. I live in a 2800sq ft home w/two floors and this unit still picked up a weak to fair signal from one end of my house to the other. I would get strong signals from about 3/4's of the distance or closer.
You can probably save $10-15 going w/a generic or lesser name brand but full driver support from generics may be a hit-and-miss game. To me, paying a bit extra for fully compliant driver support and no installation headaches is certainly worth it! Plus, it looks cool and has that antenna for better range.

XBOX Controller to PC / MAC USB Cable Adapter Review

XBOX Controller to PC / MAC USB Cable Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Does exactly what it says, so off the bat, five stars. However, getting it to work is a different story. If you use XP with the XBCD driver, you're fine. However, getting it to work on Seven is a different story. A little searching on the internet helps though. I have gotten this product to work on a laptop with XP, Vista, and Seven, so if you have one these OS and if you need this cable, get it, it works. It'll just take a bit of time to get it to work perfectly. Also, I don't know if we're allowed to advertise, however, Xpadder is probably the best gamepad mapper out there, no frills, and its about $10 USD (Much less than any other one, and I've tried many, including Pinnacle, Xpadder is far superior).
But back to the cable, I believe there is a review here that explains how they got it to work. I pretty much did the same thing. Also, this will work for EVERYTHING (in your computer) if you use it in conjunction with Xpadder, you can even control your computer with your gamepad, also no need to change the controls of your game, just map out your controller to have the same controls as your game. This means that you can use emulators, computer games (of course), control your media player, browse the web, even type up a review... if you're clever enough with button mapping. Anyway, I'm straying far off topic.
This cable works. And it works well... if you know how to work it. Five stars. I honestly don't understand why it wouldn't be five stars.

Adaptec DuoConnect for Notebooks 1422 - USB / FireWire adapter - 4 ports ( 2126600 ) Review

Adaptec DuoConnect for Notebooks 1422 - USB / FireWire adapter - 4 ports ( 2126600 )
Average Reviews:

I assumed that because this adapter didn't come with an external power adapter, it didn't need one. Wrong! It has a jack for one; Adaptec just leaves it up to YOU to supply it. Oh sure, I have a box of power adapters right here lemmee take a look...
After spending most of an afternoon trying to get this to work with first a Sandisk Cruzer Mini (a very low-power consuming device) and then a Seagate Portable External HD, I got fed up and PAID Adaptec $9.95 for a "support" call, figuring it must be either a defective unit or some bit of arcane driver installation that went awry (I know, Windows XP SP1 doesn't need special drivers for USB 2.0). I held the phone for a total of 1.5 hours without getting to speak with a "support" person. While holding, I came across a page in their "knowledge base" with the question, "What kind of power adapter is needed for the DuoConnect for Notebooks card?" I just couldn't believe it.
What marketing genius came up with this? Nowhere in the packaging, instructions, read-me files, anywhere (except for that cryptic web page) does it say anything about a power adapter.
Anyway, I exchanged this for an SIIG USB 2.0+FireWire CardBus DV Kit WITH a power supply, 1394 cable and DV editing software (ULead VideoStudio 7.0 SE DVD) for the same price. So much for Adaptec in my book. I shan't ever buy Adaptec again (said in best Spinal Tap British accent).
Oh BTW, just in case you're thinking of buying this unit, go ahead and get a 12V, 1.1A power adapter with a connector of 1.3mm (inside diameter) by 3.5mm (outside diameter) and a length of 9.0mm. You'll need one.

If you're using an NES emulator, you've probably run into the same problem I had: finding a controller that mimics the originals. It seems no modern USB controller quite got the D-pad right. BLUETOOTH 1.2/2.0 USB 2.0 100M Review

BLUETOOTH 1.2/2.0 USB 2.0 100M
Average Reviews:

This card does not, and I will repeat, DOES NOT, work as a common customer would expect it to. It will NOT run with any built in bluetooth software (i.e. Windows Bluetooth functionality) Instead it utilizes a BlueSolei software package that does not offer the same functionality as a name brand bluetooth card (which supports the in house software). This is a textbook case of cheap, quick manufactured technology pawned off on unsuspecting customers that believe they are getting a bargain. Notice how there is no company name behind this product (i.e. Linksys, Belkin, MSI, etc) Do yourself a favor- pay the extra amount for a quality product that offers support for their customers. You will have more success with drivers for multiple versions of the operating system you will use and also have access to fully functioning software. Do not buy this product, Do some research. Do not be fooled by a bargain priced item.

D-Link DBT-120 Wireless Bluetooth 2.0 USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would have given this item a 5 out of 5, except for the issue with generic windows driver installation with Win XP SP2 overwriting the D-Link driver during the initial setup process. Gives the user all sorts of weird error messages. You'll probably see one red and one blue Bluetooth "B's" in your system tray after the software installation.
The Solution (AFTER FINISHING THE INTIAL SETUP):
-Right-Click "My Computer"
-Select "Properties"
-Click "Hardware" tab
-Click "Device Manager"
-Drop down Bluetooth devices
-Right Click "Generic" one on the list
-Select "Properties"
-Click "Drivers" tab
-Click "Update Drivers"
-Select "Install from specified location"
-Select "Don't Search. I'll select..."
-Select "D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth Adapter"
-Click "Next"
-And your Done!
You'll still need to setup the individual bluetooth devices by running the "My Bluetooth Places" wizard.

KENSINGTON 33348 Bluetooth USB 2.0 Adapter Review

KENSINGTON 33348 Bluetooth USB 2.0 Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already had a Kensington Bluetooth 1.2 adapter K33085, and I used it on my Windows XP computer to communicate with my Dell Axim X30 PDA, Nokia 6230 phone, and Motorola HS820 phone headset.
I figured I would upgrade to Bluetooth 2.0 to enable future devices with higher speeds and more capabilities (e.g., stereo headset), so I bought this adapter 33348.
It seems to work fine transferring files with the PDA and the phone, but my main thing was really the headset (for Skype), and I couldn't get it to work.
I installed the software as instructed (tried on 3 separate XP computers), and paired with the headset. It said it was paired, and it noticed when I would connect or disconnect the headset, but when they were paired, there was no sound. I tried manually switching the default audio device to Bluetooth Audio (didn't have to do that on the K33085), but it still didn't work.
I also tried my friend's HS820 and H700 headsets, with the same results.
I contacted Tech Support from both Kensington and Motorola. I never got an answer from Motorola (after 5 days), and the answer from Kensington, while prompt, was not terribly helpful. After I described the problem in detail, and asked for detailed advice, the response basically amounted to "Try installing from scratch again, and if it doesn't work, here's where you can apply for a refund."
So I returned the 33348 adapter to Amazon, and I'm back to using the old K33085 adapter. Hope I manage to find a Bluetooth 2.0 adapter compatible with my headset soon.

This adapter is perfect for those wishing to connect a ps/2 mouse to a usb-enabled motherboard; however, since keyboards require more voltage than mice, they often do not work with such adapters.
I tried this adapter with several IBM and Microsoft keyboards on several different machines, and none of the keyboards worked. They receive power, but not enough to function properly. I'm not sure if other, more expensive, adapters will allow one to connect ps/2 keyboards to usb ports. I may need to give in and simply buy a modern keyboard!

PS/2 Female to USB Male Adapter Review

PS/2 Female to USB Male Adapter
Average Reviews:

I bought this to use it with my old Dell PS/2 keyboard (which was a genuine PS/2 product) This adapter has nothing to do adapting a PS/2 device into a USB port. Apparently it only works on PS/2 devices that originally come with a PS/2 to USB adapter in the first place (and you need this in the case where you lost the original one). Item description MUST state this fact but it doesn't. What you probably need is a $10-$20 range "real" PS/2 to USB adapter which probably has a PS/2-USB transcoding circuit.
