Adesso ARC-1100 - Remote control - infrared Review

Adesso ARC-1100 - Remote control - infrared
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great remote for controlling an HTPC. It's not going to replace your TV remote (nor will it even be able to turn on/off your TV), but it lets you control and launch media applications like a pro.
I use an application called "Eventghost" ([...]) to trigger actions based on which buttons I push. This is how I use the remote to launch Mediaportal, for example.
Once inside your application, it has very sane defaults for controlling playback.
It sends 4 or 5 different key combinations with each button push; there is no native software to control that. But paired with Eventghost you have customization, which is a good thing.
Being able to control the mouse as well is also a win. It's kind of slow, but it works just fine and it's great to have that versatility.
There are three different zones on the remote: mouse (bottom), control (middle), playback (top).

Wireless USB IR PC MCE Remote Control with laser pointer for PC Laptop, windows media center suppot with Windows 7 Vista w/ Wireless mouse functions (up to 33ft)

This is the absolute worst remote control that I have ever owned or operated. I spent $13.00 on this remote and $7.00 for shipping. The remote came with a dead battery so I had to go to Radio Shack and spend $5.00 plus tax on a Lithium CR 2025 battery. After investing $25.00 into a this remote control and struggling to comprehend the instructions that were written in broken English, I quickly discovered that the remote not only works intermittently, but only works within two feet of the usb receiver which renders it worthless for the purpose for which it is intended. This product is virtually worthless. I looks like I got what I paid for. I suggest to anyone looking for a computer remote control to spend at least $50 to get a remote control that actually works.

iTech - i.OVAL 303 (Bluetooth Headset) Review

iTech - i.OVAL 303 (Bluetooth Headset)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very intrigued about this item doing as much different things as remote for movies, pad for games and keyboard for chat. I must say it took some time getting used to it - have to press the keys firmly but not too much or you'll repeat them, some keys on the top row sometimes don't work, when you launch a game, you have to first remove the sensor or your Sixaxis won't be detected - so if you don't have the courage of a few hors trying you could throw it away.
But as I liked the idea very much I persevered and now I love it! I see the mixed reviews so as it's an unknown Chinese company they may have had production problems (I must say the "y" and "o", bith in the top row, often have to be pressed 2 times to work) but some lucky people will have no problem.
As a DVD/Blu-ray remote :
It's really the strong point of it, all the needed keys are thre : play, pause fast forward, stop ... you can use triangle as on the Sixaxis to have the advanced menu to have the colored buttons for Blu-ray and other options. All the "remote" keys on top work flawlessly and easy to use.
As a keyboard :
I already told the problems I had the one I got, but I think other people could have problems with other keys or not at all. The keys are small but it has the size of a small TV remote so of course they're small! When you have spent about an hour using it, you'll know the good amount of strength to press the keys for good results. I can now send messages to PSN friends or in Home with ease (except as said earlier the "y" and to a lesser degree "o" keys.
As a controller :
I didn' play much games with it (Echochrome and pool in Home), but of course you won't use it to play Resistance or Devil may cry. For the Home mini games it's quite good, the right and left sticks seem a little too sensitive but as I said after a few minutes you'll do it right.
I really think the best "game" it will be used for is "Home", as it allows you to switch from game pad to keyboard with ease and have all the needed keys well mapped.
the good things :
- as the name implies, can be used as a Blu-ray remote, a game controller and a keyboard
- it looks classy shiny black like the PS3
- it's not too big
- after a few minutes of adjustment, you'll use it all the time
the bad things :
- some keys may work badly
- you have to spend some time adjusting the right strength to push the keyboard keys
- the slide to access the keyboard is not really comfortable
- when you want to play a PS3 game, you have to unplug the sensor first and then push the Playstation button of the Sixaxis
Closing comments :
For Home and viewing Blu-rays, it's really perfect. As a keyboard it can be awkward but you get used to it fast. I really enjoy it and use it everyday.

Keyspan Presentation Remote Pro Review

Keyspan Presentation Remote Pro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do you need a remote for controlling slide shows and other presentations on your Mac, but you don't have a newer Mac that came with an Apple remote? Do you have an Apple remote for your computer, but it doesn't have enough features for your needs? If you answered yes to either of these questions, the Keyspan Presentation Remote Pro might be what you are looking for.
The Presentation Remote Pro is packed full of features. The most important feature being that it will control your presentations. It controls Powerpoint presentations, Keynote presentation, iPhoto slideshows, Quicktime slideshows, and it even controls switching tracks in iTunes (I had to try, and it worked!). In addition to controlling the visual part of the presentation, it also has volume control buttons to remotely control the audio part of your presentation.
For those who want to point out details on a presentation from a distance, it has a laser pointer. You can even black out the screen with the push of one button on the remote.
Those features alone would make this a great presentation remote. However, the remote is also a mouse (in a matter of speaking)! The top of the remote has two buttons that coincide with the left and right buttons on a mouse. There is also a mouse button, similar to those on some laptops, that will control your pointer on the screen. On the side of the unit is another button that acts like a scroll wheel. Using the remote to control the mouse was actually easier than I expected.
As far as performance, the remote is fantastic. It works from 100 feet away, and I had no problems in my tests. The remote performed without delay, and always did what I expected.
Set up is also easy. The remote consists of two parts: the remote itself and the receiver. The receiver looks like a small USB thumbdrive, and plugs into the USB port. There are no drivers needed. It is plug and play. If the remote and the receiver are not talking to each other, there is an easy method for reconnecting. The remote runs on two AAA batteries (included), and the receiver is powered by the computer. An on/off switch helps conserve battery life (assuming you remember to turn it off).
My favorite part about the remote is that I don't have to worry about losing the receiver. When not in use, the USB receiver slides into the remote itself, where it locks into place (springloaded).
With all of these features, the Keyspan Presentation Remote is well worth the $79 price. It is compatible with OSX, Windows computers, and even OS 9. Some features will be disabled due to the operating system you use.
It is always nice to try out a product that does what it says it is going to do, and it does it well.

Targus 2.4 GHz Wireless Laser Presentation Remote, Range up to 30 Feet AMP03US (Black) Review

Targus 2.4 GHz Wireless Laser Presentation Remote, Range up to 30 Feet AMP03US (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Plug it in and go. Used weekly with Windows XP for four months so far no problems. Range is at least 30 feet, very reliable. Note that a slide switch on the side turns it off to conserve the battery.
How it works: it talks to the computer as if it's a keyboard. But the only keystrokes it can send are: PageUp (the left button), PageDown (the right button), B (the bottom button), and Alt+Esc (the top button). (The red middle button is the laser pointer.)
The bottom button is like hitting the B key, which in a PowerPoint slideshow toggles a black screen, useful for momentarily hiding a slide. (By the way, W goes to a white screen if you're using a full keyboard; the remote doesn't have a button for that.)
IF YOU HAVE OTHER PROGRAMS OPEN: This remote doesn't have any magical connection to PowerPoint; it's just a mini keyboard. So it won't affect PowerPoint unless the PowerPoint slideshow window is the "active" window. If another program is running and is selected, you'll just scroll it up and down and type a lot of "B"s, same as if you pressed PageDown and B on your regular keyboard.
That's where the top button comes in. In Windows XP, pressing Alt+Esc cycles focus between all open applications in the taskbar. (It cycles through in the order they were last "active", not necessarily the order they appear on the task bar.) In other words, the top button on the remote is basically a "switch between open programs" button. So if your "next slide" button isn't working, it may be bcause a different window is selected. Don't panic and don't immediately assume the battery is dead. First make sure the power switch on the side is on. Then just alternately press the "next window" (top) and "next slide" (right) buttons until the slide changes.
IF YOU USE DUAL-DISPLAY "PRESENTER VIEW":
Presenter view opens in another window, separate from the slideshow (and separate from the main PowerPoint window where the file can be editted). The left and right arrow keys function as previous and next slide when either of those windows (Presenter view or slideshow itself) is active. But PageUp and PageDown (which is what the remote's buttons are) only work on the slideshow window, not the Presenter window (in Presenter, PageUp and PageDown scroll through notes for the current slide). That means that if you have clicked the Presenter window then it will be the active window, and the previous and next slide buttons on the remote will not work until you re-select the slideshow window (which you can do using the top button as described above).
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
If you're not afraid to delve a bit deeper into Windows, you can eliminate the chance for any confusion or delay the Presenter/PageDown issue might cause by remapping your keyboard's PageDown and PageUp keys to functions as right and left arrows. The simple and free way to do this without installing any software is a quick modification to Windows' registry:
1 - Create a new text file and open it.
2 - Copy and Paste into the text file the following three lines:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,4b,e0,49,e0,4d,e0,51,e0,00,00,00,00
3 - Save and close the text file.
4 - Change the .txt extension at the end of the filename to .reg (To do this you must have Windows Explorer's option set NOT to "Hide extensions of known file types")
5 - Right click the file and select "Merge"
6 - Reboot (or just log off and back on)
Both the keyboard and the remote are now remapped. The PageUp and PageDown keys (left and right buttons on the remote) work like left and right arrow keys now. Thus the remote will advance and reverse slides whether the active windows is the Presenter view window or the slideshow window itself.
By the way, you can still page up and down if you need to. Just turn off Number Lock, then use the 9 and 3 keys on the numeric keypad. With NumLock off the 9 and 3 work like PageUp and PageDown, even while the regular PageUp and PageDown are remapped to function as arrow keys.
Not graceful, but it gets the job done.
To undo it:
1 - Press Winkey+R (or click "Start" then "Run...")
2 - Enter "regedit"
3 - In the left column, by expanding the folders, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
4 - Right Click on "Scancode Map" and delete.
5 - Reboot (or just log off and back on)
Registry editor is not a toy, and you can incapacitate your computer if you mess around in there.

Satechi SP400 Smart-Pointer (Silver) 2.4Ghz RF Wireless Presenter with Mouse Function and Laser Pointer Review

Satechi SP400 Smart-Pointer (Silver) 2.4Ghz RF Wireless Presenter with Mouse Function and Laser Pointer
Average Reviews:

This presenter could not be simpler to connect to a Macbook. I plugged the dongle in and a window opened suggesting that I might need to follow some actions through if the devise I was attempting to connect was a keyboard. Otherwise, if the devise is not a keyboard, it stated, I could disregard the prompt. I closed that window and, lo and behold the presenter was instantly fully functional !
I am also very satisfied with the performance the SP-400 provides. I had been using the remote that Mac supplied with my Macbook and it worked fine as long as I had a good clear line-of-sight shot at my computer.
On a few occasions, when I found myself off-center from the front of my Mac the function of the remote was impaired. How different this little presenter is ! The RF receiver picks up my clicks no matter where I point the presenter. Distance is no issue either. The range is fantastic (spec: up to 100 ft) !
The laser pointer is intense and powerful as well. As to the mouse function, as is true with most all multi-function presenters, the mouse feature works, but would probably not be something you would use a lot due to restricted directionality ( pointer moves up and down, left and right with arrow buttons - no true scrolling).
The SP 400 is smaller than the pictures seem to depict. It's just large enough to cradle in your hand comfortably and the heft is ideal as well.
Fantastic for Mac and probably the other guys as well !

IOGEAR Phaser 3-in-1 Presenter, Mouse, and Laser Pointer GME422RW6 (Black) Review

IOGEAR Phaser 3-in-1 Presenter, Mouse, and Laser Pointer GME422RW6 (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to use the trackball mouse in presentations because I go between web pages and powerpoint and wanted to do some mouse navigation. I also have a logitech trackman trackball desktop mouse and that uses standard Microsoft drivers. The Logitech trackball speed follows the pointer speed setting in the Mocrosoft mouse settings. I have it set on the fastest setting and love it that way so I can get across a screen with minimal rolling of the ball.
Unfortunately this trackball does not follow the Microsoft pointer settings at all and iogear's mouse configuation tools do not include a trackball speed setting and it tracks soooo slooooow. I had to roll the ball 360 degrees several times to get the cursor across one screen view of a web page! It was ridiculous. I verified with iogeear support that the trackball speed is hard-coded. What good is a trackball that can't be configured to a person's speed preference??? Total bummer. It was returned.
It was also touch-and-go on the connection, laser pointer and the charging light didn't work. A half-baked implementation of a very nice concept and nice looking product.

Loop Pointer In-Air Mouse for PCs & Macs connected to TVs & Projectors Review

Loop Pointer In-Air Mouse for PCs and Macs connected to TVs and Projectors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a media center PC hooked to my TV and have been struggling for months on how to deal with non-HTPC websites like Hulu. When I first heard about the Loop Pointer I thought the idea was potentially interesting but wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money on another "wireless mouse."
This is NOT another "wireless mouse."
First, the big stuff.
As a free-space pointer with no line-of-sight requirements, the Loop performs remarkably. I was absolutely astonished at the subtlety with which it tracked my wrist and hand movements. Whereas before I would have to use some sort of wireless mouse on a hard pad on my lap, now I can leave the Loop comfortably by my side as I sit on the couch and make little movements to control the PC.
Hillcrest also got the little things right, too...
Firstly, it comes in a package that doesn't require a chainsaw to open. I can't begin to express how tired I am of packages that require a serrated knife from my kitchen to open!
I installed the Loop on 3 PC's in my house and each went perfectly. Just plug in the usb dongle and it gets recognized as a mouse instantly. No drivers needed is a big deal for me, personally.
Finally, there's an off button on the controller. This may seem trivial, but it really helps the battery life and performance. The fact that I can click it off when I want means I don't have to wait for some arbitrary time-out before it powers down. Also, the fact that I can easily turn it off and on means that my kids - or cat - won't be accidentally changing channels or re-formatting my hard drive when I get up to go to the bathroom!
In conclusion:
Will this product unalterably change my life?
No, but it sure as heck will change my life on the couch - and that's a pretty good start. It's worth every cent and I happily recommend it.

Windows 7 Vista XP Media Center MCE PC Remote Control and Infrared Receiver for Home, Premium and Ultimate Edition Review

Windows 7 Vista XP Media Center MCE PC Remote Control and Infrared Receiver for Home, Premium and Ultimate Edition
Average Reviews:

This remote connects easily and works well for Windows Media Center. However, I bought this for use with XBMC only to discover that this is not truly a "remote"; It simulates keyboard presses instead, which means that an advanced remote config program such as EventGhost cannot be used as it does not identify almost all of the buttons on the remote. This is dissapointing because It cannot be remapped to work for a custom program (ie controlling winamp, itunes, XBMC, etc). If you are buying this for purely Windows Media Center, than go for it. It's a great deal. If you want something more out of your remote, then look elsewhere.

Logitech Wireless Presenter R400 with Red Laser Pointer Review

Logitech Wireless Presenter R400 with Red Laser Pointer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, you don't really get a feel for the size of thing from the picture or even the video. As noted in the product dimensions, it's 4.5" by 1.5", so draw that to see what it's like. It's small and very comfortable to hold, with a rubbery surface that makes it very unlikely you'll drop it even with a light grip.
I especially like that the USB dongle stores inside the unit, so the two pieces are much less likely to get separated. It comes with a nice protective zipper case, though I don't use it. I just throw the thing in my laptop bag without the case.
I use this on a Mac and it works, mostly. With a little customizing, it works completely.
The first time I plugged it in, a "Keyboard Assistant" ran since the Mac didn't recognize the "keyboard". I simply quit the assistant, and there was no problem. The forward, back, and black screen buttons work fine on both Powerpoint and Keynote. However out of the box, the "play" button works on neither. With some fiddling, I was able to get the play button to work on both.
To configure Powerpoint for the play button, go to the Keyboard system preference and pick Keyboard Shortcuts. Then hit the + key to add a shortcut. Pick Microsoft Powerpoint for the application (you may need to hit Other... to find it, since it's in a subdirectory in Applications). For Menu Title type in, exactly, "Slide Show" (without the quotes). Then in the Keyboard Shortcut, simply press the play button on the remote. That sets the shortcut to F5, which is what the remote sends with you press play. Now the play button works for Powerpoint. You can do the same for Keynote, with the menu title "Play Slideshow".
Then all the buttons on the remote work on the Mac.
The red laser is not very bright, but passable. I would have preferred a brighter green laser. The wireless range is more than good enough for any room I've been in.
Notably missing is any ability to move the mouse arrow or click. Moving forward and back is not really enough if you have movies or links in your presentation. In that case, you'll want a more capable remote.
The bottom line is that the R400 provides the minimum functionality, even on a Mac, with a really nicely designed form with a great feel. However the functions are only minimal, one of the functions doesn't work on a Mac out of the box, and in the end, it is a little overpriced. There are better choices, e.g. the Keyspan Presentation Remote Pro. Though I wish the better choices felt as good to hold as this one.

Noah Company MediaGate GP-IR02BK Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate MCE Remote Control, 2 Channel IR (Black) Review

Noah Company MediaGate GP-IR02BK Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate MCE Remote Control, 2 Channel IR (Black)
Average Reviews:

This remote seems to work well for the basic MCE functionality, but it has some issues that hamper its usability (for me.)
First, the "learning" feature that's been mentioned elsewhere. The MS remote for MCE has the ability to "learn" to turn your TV on/off, and to adjust the volume on your stereo (or TV.) This remote mentions such a feature in the manual ("if available"), but the version sold here doesn't actually have this feature. Having to juggle three remotes gets cumbersome, especially when the "standard" MCE remote doesn't have this problem.
Second is response time. As implied in my previous paragraph, I also have an MS MCE remote. The MS remote/receiver is quite responsive. With this remote you have to hold down each button longer for it to "register" as a button-click with the receiver. At first I thought it was an issue with the remote itself, but I later realized it's an issue with the receiver. (The receiver that came with this remote will work with the MS remote, but it still has a "sluggish" response time. No such issue if I go back to the MS receiver.) If you're used to clicking through menus (or commercials) quickly, this gets aggravating because it doesn't register some of your clicks.
Finally, this remote is extremely lightweight. It has no heft to it. This might actually be a good thing if it weren't for the learning issue, but since I'm not actually using the remote for its intended purpose, this means I can't even use it as a paperweight on my coffee table.

IOGEAR 2 Port USB Cable KVM Switch with Audio and Mic GCS72U (Black) Review

I purchased the IOGear 2 Port USB Cable KVM Switch with Audio and Mic GCS72U in order to use a Pc and a Macintosh Mini with one keyboard, monitor and mouse. The set up was easy. My only glitch was having to buy an inexpensive USB keyboard. There is no PS/2 port on this model. The model also worked with a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, but I wanted to use that set with my main work computer. Once set up I can switch easily between the Mac and the Pc with the press of a button. IOGear 2-Port MiniView Micro USB PLUS KVM Switch with Audio and 4 Cables GCS632U

Got a Logitech Harmony universal remote? Want to control your home theater pc with it along with everything else in your living room? Then this is the remote you want. I actually only needed the IR adapter and i was able to control my pc with the Logitech Harmony 880. I tried the remote pictured here and it works perfectly but i didn't need it. If you want a cheap IR to control your HTPC then here is a good solution. Oh and to program the Harmony to work with it you'll need the model name and number which is: Chinavision CVSB-983

I'd been looking for a good keyboard and mouse combination for my home theater PC (HTPC) for quite some time. While the usual assortment of wireless options worked, but weren't convenient in a living room setting. As such, I decided to give this RII Mini a try. I have to admit, I'm surprised. It was smaller than I expected from the pictures -- it's about 2/3 the length of my cable box remote, and about half the thickness (the width is the same). As such, it doesn't take up much room - it looks more or less like an odd remote. Install was simple enough - the bluetooth receiver I had on the machine paired with it quickly, and Windows installed the driver. The range seems decent for my living room -- I've not had any problems with it at all (which surprised - the wireless mice tended to be a bit dodgy in the past). The unit seems rather well built, and the weight seems just right. The backlit keyboard is excellent as well - just the thing for watching movies in the dark. Responsiveness on the trackpad is about the same as that on my laptop, though it's a bit small. The keyboard is decent to type on, though placement is a little odd on some keys. Like any small keyboard, that's to be expected. All in all, I'm quite happy with this unit, and I've found it even works with my Android phone. Not what I bought it for, but it works quite well. Excellent stuff!

The android driver that comes with this is outdated and does not work. After some searching, the driver comes from teksoftco.com and can be updated to version 1.7. But, according to thier website forums, this keyboard can not be connected to because the keyboard vendors bluetooth license was expired. They suggest contacting keyboard manufacturer (Chinavasion). They do not have a work-around as this error comes from the Google APIs.
So, it look like I'll be sending mine back!
