Micro Innovations KP17B Numeric Keypad Review

Micro Innovations KP17B Numeric Keypad

This keypad saved my sanity. I have a laptop and hate not having a real numeric keypad. The built in one is unusable. This attachable keypad gives me the functionality I love. The description should say PS/2 so people are aware it's not USB though.

Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52 Review

Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
[ EDIT: I revised this review 12-17-03. See below for additions. ]
The Belkin n52 is the successor to the n50 Speedpad. Like the n50, the n52 is a mixed bag of plusses and minuses. Belkin has marketed the n52 as the n50 "remodeled by gamer feedback," with added buttons and functionality. They've also said that it'll give you "Faster and More Intuitive Frags!" or some other market-eze. I had wanted the original n50 for quite a while to help me out when playing MMOs and RPGs (AO, DAOC, NWN) and shooters (NOLF, Deus Ex). When I finally decided to buy one, I heard that Belkin was shortly releasing the improved n52. So I grabbed one, and here's the scoop.
Installing this thing was a snap, and using the profile software is also amazingly easy. In only a few minutes of use I was making my own custom profiles. Macros are easy to write. The profile software has a few bugs in it, which I won't get into here. Hopefully Belkin will fix this stuff in the next few weeks. The bugs I describe are really just inconvenient - they won't stop you from using the product.
Construction is a mixed bag on the n52. In it's favor, the n52 generally feels sturdy as hell and doesn't move a bit during heavy play. Despite this it's a compact little thing - I have a cramped desk and I managed to easily fit the n52 between my keyboard and the edge of the desk. I have big hands and the unit fits comfortably under my palm with my fingers resting on the buttons. The hand rest fits right into the curve of my palm and makes the whole thing feel very ergonomic and natural. The hand rest is supposed to be adjustable but I think some n00b at the factory glued mine down, because I can't make it move the slightest bit.
More strong points: Belkin expanded the n50 quite a bit by adding new buttons. The n52 has a total of six new buttons: four new keyboard-type buttons were added in a row under the original ten; a big orange button was added over the directional pad; and a "thumb bar" was added on a little extension that sticks out from the unit on the right side. The original n50 speedpad had a throttle wheel that a lot of people described as useless; this has been replaced with a very useful mouse wheel. In addition, Belkin has apparently heard gamer feedback that the directional pad on the n50 was junky and inaccurate; the n52 features a big, sturdy, and seemingly very accurate directional pad that I really like using.
But the drawbacks: Unlike the regular keyboard buttons you're used to, the action on all the buttons is a little stiff. I don't know if this is intentional design or what - maybe they were thinking that the control will get heavy wear, so some extra stickiness is actually good? The keyboard-style hotkeys are kind of sticky when I press them, and sometimes I have to press twice to get the button to register the keystroke. To push the new orange button by the directional pad, I have to grip the front of the controller with my fingers for leverage. Finally, the "thumb bar" also takes a bit of pressure to activate, and has sometimes not fired unless I push it very deliberately in the "right way."
Likewise the mouse wheel has a funny, cheap feel to it. Clicking the mouseclick action on the wheel is a little harder to do that I'd prefer, and the wheel itself rotates too easily and doesn't lock firmly into place like a normal mouse wheel does.
The stickiness of the buttons leaves me thinking that I won't be using it in shooter type games - I can't be pushing a key over and over in shooter games that require instant reactions. If the buttons loosen up a little over time, perhaps I'll change my mind.
Still, I'm very happy with the n52 despite the flaws I've described. Using it in AO, DAOC and NWN, the thing is nothing short of miraculous. Having all of your crucial commands literally "at your fingertips" without any fumbling, reaching, or looking at the keyboard is a very, very nice thing. Hitting a button and having a macro run a series of keystrokes, saving a lot of time and distraction, is also a godsend. My impression is that it would be great in any RPG / MMORPGs and RTS type games - ones that don't require much sensitivity and reactivity, and benefit a lot from short macros due to their complex command systems. After only using it for a few days, I can't imagine playing without it.
[ EDIT 12-17-03: This thing has been plenty responsive for shooters. I've bumped my rating up to 5 stars. Although sticky, the buttons work great, and my sense is that Belkin was trying to build this thing as tough as a brick - and they succeeded. A month and a half after buying it I cannot imagine playing ANY game without it. It's a truly phenomenal product. ]

IBM Numeric Keypad For Thinkpad USB Review

IBM Numeric Keypad For Thinkpad USB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unfortunately, Lenovo has not yet seen fit to release a Vista-compatible driver, so the laptop's keyboard and the numeric keypad's number lock feature are in sync under Vista. In other words, if you want to type numbers on the numeric keypad (why else would you buy it?) using Windows Vista, the portion of your laptop's keyboard that substitutes for a numeric keypad will also type numbers. Obviously, for quick data entry, it quickly becomes annoying to have to constantly toggle the "Num Lock" key.
Targus makes a similar keypad that does include a Vista driver to avoid this annoying behavior, so that you can input text on your laptop keyboard and numbers on your numeric keypad. It does not, however, have the standard 10-key layout, which is the feature I like most about this model.
Updated (Sept. 2007): Lenovo has released a Vista driver for this keypad, so it now works as it should. You can activate Num Lock on the keypad and still type properly on the laptop keyboard.

USB Numeric Keypad with 19 Keys + Space Bar for Laptops (Manufacturer Part # CL-USB-NUMSPC) Review

USB Numeric Keypad with 19 Keys + Space Bar for Laptops (Manufacturer Part # CL-USB-NUMSPC)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Connectland Numeric Keypad is a plug-and-play USB device that allows the user to enter digits into documents or the calculator on your computer or laptop. There is no installation disk. You simply plug it into a USB port and start using. Or so it stated in the ad. In truth, although my laptop did recognize the device, and said it was working properly, it did not want to work. I had to update the device driver, and do other internal stuff before it started working. Your laptop or computer may allow it to work right away. Each laptop is different. Now that it is working, I really enjoy the function and design of it. Having the space bar over to the side is very comfortable for my thumb, and all the keys are within easy reach. This keypad is well worth the price, and is more durable than the one I spent $20 that broke after one week.USB Numeric Keypad with 19 Keys + Space Bar for Laptops (Manufacturer Part # CL-USB-NUMSPC)

Portable USB Numeric Keypad PC for Laptop Notebook Review

Portable USB Numeric Keypad PC for Laptop Notebook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Layout:
The usb keypad is good for the price. I am used to the desktop numeric keypads, so the key arrangements feels weird. This mainly applies for the addition key. It takes up 2 key spaces on the desktop keyboards, the second key space is now occupied by the backspace button. I like that fact that it has the 000 button. It saves me time when I am typing huge numbers. The backspace key is okay, but I don't like the placement. I guess that it's more of a personal preference, so some people might not have problems with it. It will take a few weeks, but I will get used to the key placement.
Price:
The price of the keypad is really cheap. If you look at the other products on amazon, they cost $8 more than this keypad. This also includes the 000 key, and a backspace button. I paid about $12 for the usb numeric keypad; the shipping was about $3. The usb numeric keypad is really cheap when you compare it to retail stores. Most retail stores sell these for about $30, and these are just the lowest costing keypads. They don't even included the 000 key, or the backspace key.

Convenience is the name of the game. This keypad is much easier to use than the row of numbers above your notebook's keyboard. Its stylish design matches many keyboards and the keys have smooth, quiet operation. No batteries or extra power supply are needed: it is powered by the USB connection to your computer.

Targus AKM10US Wireless Keypad and Laser Mouse Set for Laptop Computers Review

Targus AKM10US Wireless Keypad and Laser Mouse Set for Laptop Computers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a financial statement auditor this product looked perfect for fieldwork since both the mouse and 10-key used the same USB port. The product works wonderfully and doesn't have conflicts with my co-workers wireless mice. The only problem, which is somewhat significant is that the mouse uses two AAA batteries and I end up having to replace them every two to three weeks, which seems excessive. The 10-key runs on one AA battery and I have only had to replace it once in over a year so no problems there.
NOTE: I use this product about 30 hours a week on average

Adesso MINI SLIMTOUCH TOUCHPAD USB KEYBOARD SILVER WITH BLACK KEYS ( AKB-410US ) Review

The potentially corruptive touch-tapping feature/bug cannot be disabled. This causes unintentional button clicks and possible data loss.
I have contacted Adesso, and they replied that there is no way to disable this behaivior.
Touch-tapping is especially harmful when in a browser or word processing program, where a unintentional click can mean accidental deletes or purchases.
I recommend against purchase of this device, and recommend to Adesso, that this behaiviour be disabled by default, and only enabled via software/driver.

Cyber Snipa Game Pad V2 Black Review

Cyber Snipa Game Pad V2 Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like many of you, I have been using a regular keyboard for years ever since games required you to use the arrow keys. Playing COD, many people are good just using the keyboard, but I wanted an edge. I got this gamepad after trying the wolf king gamepad. That thing is too big and too many buttons to use. So I returned it and got this one.
The best thing about this game pad is there is no software required and Windows recognizes like nothing else. All the buttons are programmable within the game(s). There are 2 side buttons that when pressed have a blue lcd lights shining. These are mainly for show as the ganepad does not have back lit key lighting. The WASD keys are big. The one difference you will notice is that the keys on the keyboard and the buttons on the game pad. Since the the keyboard's keys are all the same size and the game pad have a bigger WASD, you may have to re customize some of the keys within your game...I normally use (when using a keyboard) the c to crouch. I changed that to the X for the gamepad and got used to it very quicky.
Another great feature is the wrist pad that is attached. It helps with long sessions of gaming. The only thing bad I can say is that after 3 days the lights started going out on the game pad. Cyber Snipa has a great policy from the date of purchase you have 1 year and they will replace it. I emailed them and they sent me a replacement. The one had the lights working, but then 1 light on the side would not work...No big deal, but I contacted them again and they sent me a new one...The new one had the lights working, but when plugged into the usb and turning on the pc, it would not boot up all the way and I had to unplug the game pad for the pc to boot up and plug in the gamepad back in. That was annoying. So I sent back the 2 I received and kept the original...
Pros....best thing ever.
Will take about a week to get used to, but then you will not be able to go back to a normal keyboard...Trust me this is a major plus.
Great wrist pad
Buttons feel natural
Cons....Lights may go out
If you want the edge and people who used to beat you all the time start to question you and even accuse of you cheating (which I take as a compliment), don't hesitate, get this, you will not be sorry.

I would actually recommend against this item. The range on the keypad either sucks or the item itself is faulty. I can have the keypad in my lap and my laptop less than a foot away and the keypad will skip numbers when I'm trying to calculate or type in a string of numbers. It also seems to independantly turn off the number lock key. Save your money.

Adesso 19-Key Mobile USB Numeric Keypad with Retractable Cable ( AKP-150 ) Review

Adesso 19-Key Mobile USB Numeric Keypad with Retractable Cable ( AKP-150 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this keypad for the purpose of gaming and performing live electronic music, not data entry.
It just arrived today, I opened the box, plugged it in and popped up metapad to try it out. So far, I'm quite pleased. However, the pressure required to press the keys is about four times what is needed on a normal laptop keyboard, and about twice what is needed on my klunky, classic desktop keyboard.
That said, I still love it. I wouldn't want to spend 2 hours punching numbers into a spreadsheet with it, but I'm confident it will perform quite well for my intended purposes. But, I am hoping that it breaks in a bit with use. Also, the flat, ribbon style, retracting cable works like a charm, and it's exactly the size and weight I'd hoped (I'll post a customer picture soon).
This thing is going to be great plugged into my laptop at shows, and I'm looking forward to playing my favorite space sim with a joystick in each hand and this thing just in reach without a full keyboard in the way. =D

(The item I am reviewing is Targus PAUK10U USB Keypad)
----------
This doesn't work with a mac unless...
Do exactly as I say and it will work fine:
1. When your Targus keypad is disconnected press and hold the Num Lock button.
2. Connect your Targus Keypad USB cable to your mac USB port (not a hub) while still pressing and holding the Num Lock key.
3. When the Num Lock green LED light goes on, wait for exactly at least three seconds (count 1, 2, 3) then release the Num Lock Key.
4. Now it shouldn't Beep and it will work fine in programs like Excel.
-----------
I am typing a bunch of numbers on it as a proof below:
123456789 0 000 . / * - +
It works smoothly.
-----------
I gave it three stars only for being such a hassle to use on macs when any stupid USB keyboard would just work.
I have a MacBook (latest intel black model) running mac OS X 10.5.6
-----------
I hope that was helpful.

Logitech Wireless Number Pad N305 Review

Logitech Wireless Number Pad N305
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am taking an accounting class and needed a faster way to enter numbers in my lap top. I initially bought a wired number pad, but the wire got in the way. So I got the Logitech number pad N305. My first impression after removing it from the packing was that it was big and a bit heavy. I posted pictures of it next to my regular computer keyboard and on my hand. It reminded me of calculators for people with poor eyesight.
The connection to the computer was a breeze. Files were automatically installed after plugging the receiver in the computer's USB port. Afterward, I was ready to go. Keying in numbers is easy and fast, and the keys have a nice bounce. I found the calculator hot key (top center) helpful. As I was working out problems, I was able to quickly open the calculator, do addition/multiplication/division etc, get an answer, and then enter it in my online homework.
A cool feature, one can download a software from Logitech's website and use it to program the top three hot keys to do other tasks. For instance, the hot key pre-programmed to open Excel could be re-programmed to open PowerPoint, or work as the TAB key, or Arrow up key, or open a folder of your choice. The options are endless, sort of speak.
I wish Logitech had included a carrying pouch to protect it. The back of the unit is made out of a glossy black plastic that can be easily scratched. It also shows fingerprints, smudges, etc.
Overall, it cold be smaller and lighter, but we all have different needs. So this number pad might be just perfect for you.
