Wacom Graphire2 Pen, Mouse & Tablet Set (Steel-Blue) Review

Wacom Graphire2 Pen, Mouse and Tablet Set (Steel-Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Wacom brand was the first one to come to mind when thinking about a graphics tablet - which I initially thought would be for graphics alone, but which has reached the stage after just two months of use has almost replaced my mouse.
Based on the tablet wizard, my ideal tablet would have been the Intuos2 for twice the price and twice the pressure levels. But I studied the Graphire2 very carefully, and opted for that instead, being half the price. It features a customizable pen with 512 levels of pressure (which is enough for most people), with an eraser, programmable duo-switch and very accurate pointer. At first it might feel strange using the pen to hover over the active area to move it around, but then it becomes natural. When you hit with the pen, the tablet it acts as a mouse click, and when you move along the tablet it acts as a click and drag. You can program every button on both pen and mouse for every application that you use, for a really custom fit. I can position the pointer in Word, and just flip the pen over and erase text, or I can be painting in Photoshop, and just flip the pen over and start erasing any mistakes without changing tools in the toolbar.
The tablet using absolute positioning, and each point in the active area (4x5 inches), corresponds to a position on your screen. I read previous reviews that considered 4x5 too small, but I looked at my mouse swing, and I rarely made long movements with my mouse, and this active area is quite sufficient for me. In some programs you can re-map this active area to a portion of the screen. The mouse is also absolute, and only works on the active area of the tablet. There is an overlay on the tablet for tracing, which could be quite useful, but I rather scan images and trace them on the screen - however, for people without a scanner, it can be sufficient.
The 4x5 tablet fits well on my desk taking up as much room as my mouse pad. I suffer from RSI, but this ergonomic pen creates no strain on my wrist though it took a little getting used to - luckily there is a tutorial and exercises to teach you, and you'd be up and running with the tablet in no time. The pen feels natural, as we're used to holding pens more than using a clunky mouse, which we had to learn a long time ago anyway. I tried using the tablet on every computer I could after that, so I won't have to use a mouse again - it works on Windows 2000 laptops, which make presentations really nice, as you can make annotations and drawings during a Powerpoint presentation, and you can even hold the tablet like a notepad, so you don't have to bend over to use the "mouse" again if you're standing. Since it is a USB tablet, it doesn't need any extra power source, which is a plus for me, as every other peripheral I have has taken up all six sockets in my power strip. The tablet doesn't work under Windows NT 4.0, as a warning to business users who still have that running at work.
The included software alone is well worth over $100USD. Think about buying Adobe PhotoShop 5.0LE and Corel Painter Classic and you'd have already spent over $100USD. I've heard problems with other USB tablets, but never with the Wacom tablets, they're even endorsing Opensource development of their drivers to get the tablet working under Linux (which it does now). The tablet comes included with a battery-less, cordless, scroll mouse that works on the tablet as well. I've so far used my tablet/pen/mouse for everything from surfing the web, helping me edit programs that I write, manipulating images and drawing some personal masterpieces, in less time than I took before. Wacom's website features a tip archive, a list of all the software that has hidden features for a stylus, and even special offers for discounts on products for Graphire2 owners.
There is no question that this tablet lives up to its brand name.

Graphire2 is for anyone who wants to get more from their photos. Have fun moving people around in photos, colorizing old black and white images, or just cleaning up scratches and imperfections. Graphire2's pen has 512 levels of pressure, so you can easily edit your digital photos or make a quick sketch. Graphire2's cordless, batteryless mouse has no ball to clean so it never skips. Combine all this with the stylish Graphire2 tablet, and you have the perfect solution for all your input needs - in a space no bigger than a mouse pad.

Evoluent Vertical Mouse Optical Review

Evoluent Vertical Mouse Optical
Average Reviews:

There's no doubt that the idea of a mouse oriented in this is a good idea, and helped with a lot of shoulder and arm pain I was having.
But I've had nothing but problems with this thing. After about a month of use, it started to behave erratically. The page scrolls up when I'm scrolling the wheel down (but only sometimes), or I roll just one little tick on the wheel and the page jumps to the bottom. I thought the wheel perhaps needed cleaning, but there is no way to open the mouse, no screws, no obvious place where it could be pried open without breaking it.
The most recent problem is that the mouse turns itself off after about 30 seconds (but only sometimes) -- and I mean completely off. The only way to get it to work is to unplug it from the USB port and plug it back in, which I am now doing at least a dozen times a day.
All of this would be fine if the company offered to replace it, or at least offered some decent technical support. But they are really missing in action here. E-mails go unanswered. A phone call put me into voice mail which was never returned. Obviously the other reviewers here really like this mouse, and I would too, if mine worked.
Buy it if you want, and hope you get one of the good ones.

Smart Pad Multi-Touch Gesture Touchpad/Trackpad USB Mouse with Keypad for PC Windows 7/Vista/XP Review

Smart Pad Multi-Touch Gesture Touchpad/Trackpad USB Mouse with Keypad for PC Windows 7/Vista/XP
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was hesitant to buy this product because it seemed a little too good to be true. I prefer touchpads over mice because of RSI. Touchpads are much easier on my hands than mice and can be used on any surface, including leaning back in a chair and holding it in the palm of my hand. There are very few good options for external touchpads. The most common are the Cirque touchpads, but they are expensive and don't support multi-touch.
This cheap, generic touchpad is perfect for my needs and sells at a great price. There is a branded version at a higher price point that I saw on Amazon, but it is the exact same thing as this device, except it has a logo. Save your money and get the generic. Perhaps you'll lose out on tech support, but at this price, I wasn't that concerned about support.
The device is a bit bigger than the average man's palm. It is light but feels pretty solid. It is ideal for mobile use and it is easy to stow in a laptop bag, which I do. I carry it everywhere I carry my laptop. Why carry an external touch pad with a laptop that has a touch pad? Several reasons: (1) because of RSI I put my lap top on a mount (a Cricket portable stand when I travel)and use an external keyboard (I use a Goldtouch portable ergonomic keyboard when I travel). (2) This touchpad is more advanced than my laptop's. My laptop doesn't support multitouch and all the touchpad shortcuts that multitouch can provide. (3) This external touchpad doubles as a numeric keypad. I find using a dedicated numeric keypad far more comfortable than using the embedded keys in a laptop. If you use the calculator a lot on your laptop, having a dedicated numeric keypad is handy.
Installation was simple. Plug in the USB cable and windows automatically installs the drivers. No need for a CD or to download anything. I use it with Windows 7 and it works perfectly. I did not test on any other OS, but I assume that it will work fine on Vista. The manual says it also supports XP. Seems that Mac OS is not supported.
In addition to the expected one-finger mouse-replacement functionality you'd expect from a touch pad, it supports at least 11 two and three finder gestures. The configuration options are rather simple, basically allowing you to toggle support for various guestures on and off. You can't create your own gestures or map gestures to your own programs. You also can't us this for hand writing or doodling. It also doesn't work with Scrybe, a gesture macro program that works with some touchpads. But what it does offer more than meets my needs and more than I would expect for such a low price.
I really like the fact that it doubles as a numeric keypad. Some may not like this, expecially since they add some raised dots to give tactile cues to differentiate the number "keys". Because of this it doesn't have the glassy smooth glide feel of many touchpads. This doesn't bother me, but I could see it bother some people. You toggle between normal touchpad operation and numeric keypad with a large "mode" button. When switch to numeric keypad mode, an led lights up. I thing they could have made device smaller if they got rid of the LED and mad the mode button smaller, but it does make it very easy to switch modes. When in numeric keypad mode, the primary and secondary mouse-click buttons are remapped. The left button fire up a new instance of the windows calculator and right button acts as a backspace.
The touch pad operation has been very good. It is rare for a tap to not take and the sensitivity is as good as my laptop's touch pad. Two and three finger guestures work as advertised and I now use the touch pad exclusively to scroll pages up and down, page up and down, zoom in and out, open windows explorer, and other actions that I had to use the keyboard for in the past.
This little gadget has been one of the nicest surprises of any recent purchase. It is cheap, works great, and travels well.

Ergonomic Touchpad Review

Ergonomic Touchpad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this product for about four months now. I use it with a October-2009-release iMac running Snow Leopard, my previous computer having been a G4 PowerBook.
First, don't waste your money on the clip that supposedly attaches it to your keyboard. Even the one for the newer Mac keyboards doesn't work (the clip slides back at any pressure on the trackpad), and I had to tape mine in place with duct tape.
The good stuff: the trackpad is small and can be placed very close to your keyboard. Clicking and scrolling are good, although not great. It does install supereasy.
The bad stuff: Having no drivers means you have no software control over how sensitive the touchpad is, and as it comes, it is MUCH too sensitive. I am always double-clicking when I mean a single click, dragging when I don't mean to, etc. I'd like to be able to turn off the "right click" feature (clicking in the upper right corner = right clicking): the worst thing about it is that it right clicks when I'm trying to scroll, but I frequently stray too far to the right and right click when I mean regular clicking. I've gotten better on keyboard shortcuts just to avoid the worry on some tasks.
The really bad stuff: The click and drag simply does not work, at least not when I mean it to. I was always ending up with things dropped in the wrong place; text selections either refused to end or double-clicked at the end, deselecting the text. As I said, I am always picking up and dragging things when I don't mean to. I always use my mouse for drag and drop. Some things (like taking a screen capture of a portion of the screen) are just impossible without turning to the mouse. I wish the trackpad had a button or two, but I grant I wouldn't be willing to go up to something that took up a lot more desktop space to get them.
So the short version is that it is OK. It doesn't replace the touchpad on the PowerBook. I feel the loss of mouse buttons. It does for most cursor-control tasks, so long as you keep your regular mouse handy for the more demanding ones.

Logitech Optical Marble Mouse (USB/PS2) Review

Logitech Optical Marble Mouse (USB/PS2)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball is possibly THE most intelligently designed pointing device for PCs and Macintosh personal computers. First of all, in spite of its name, it's a trackball, the superior successor to the computer mouse. Unlike a mouse, it sits in one place and your fingers guide the pointer. You click on menu selections, icons and such with your thumb. It takes mere minutes to get used to this method of moving around the screen but after you do, using a mouse will seem cumbersome and quaint (which it is).
Beneath that black-dotted burgundy ball lies the secret of the Marble Mouse's responsiveness, longevity and reliability. An infrared emitter and optical pickup track the movement of the ball, not mechanical rollers which quickly become gunked up with skin oils and dust. You'd have to let a really thick layer of crud accumulate on the ball before you'll see an impact on the Marble Mouse's performance. Small enough to tuck into your notebook, laptop or PowerBook's carrying case, the Marble Mouse is pure computing bliss compared to jittery trackpads, wobbly finger sticks and erratic rollerballs.
PC users running Windows XP and earlier can simply install the PS/2 adapter and plug the Marble Mouse into the PS/2 mouse port without installing any software. With Windows 98 and later, you can pop off the PS/2 adapter and plug the Marble Mouse into a USB port. Macintosh owners running Mac OS 8.6 or higher will need to install MouseWare from the included CD-ROM and disable the Macintosh Mouse control panel in the Mac OS Extension Manager.
Unlike its more expensive TrackMan siblings, the Marble Mouse is fully ambidextrous, with equal-sized buttons on both sides. The included Logitech MouseWare (also downloadable at www.logitech.com) makes the Marble Mouse behave like a 3-button mouse on PCs (you press BOTH buttons together to access the functions of a third button) while giving Macintosh users one-finger, one-click access to content menus (shades of Windows, eh? :) ). Windows users also benefit from the new page up/page down buttons located just above the main buttons.
Finally, though the price might seem steep compared to a $5 mouse you could pick up at Best Buy or CompUSA, recall how many of those cheap little rodents you've owned and thrown away in the course of a single year.

3M Ergonomic Mouse, Optical, USB/PS2 Compatible, Large Size, Black (EM500GPL) Review

3M Ergonomic Mouse, Optical, USB/PS2 Compatible, Large Size, Black (EM500GPL)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this 3M Ergonomic mouse and the Evoluent Vertical Mouse2 at the same time to compare.
I really enjoyed the feel of the 3M mouse, but it is limited in what it can do. I need to scroll often with my kind of work. The 3M mouse does not have a scroll wheel it has a scroll button. When you push the scroll button, you then have to physically move the mouse up and down to scroll.
The Evoluent Vertical Mouse2 is pretty comfortable. It seems a bit light at times, so it takes a while to get used to it. I really enjoy the scroll wheel and the 5 programmable buttons; Left, Right, Middle, Wheel button (for your fingers) and a Back button (by the thumb) and the scroll wheel. Of course you can program each one to do what you want. You might want to visit Evoluent's web site to get the most up to date driver.
Although the 3M is slightly more comfortable then the Vertical Mouse2, with my type of work I need the functionality of the Evoluent Vertical Mouse2. If 3M had a scroll wheel I probably would have kept it, but I'm going to stick with the Evoluent Vertical Mouse2.

Adesso USB EasyCat 2-BTN Touchpad Black Cirque Glidepoint Technology ( GP160U-121 ) Review

Adesso USB EasyCat 2-BTN Touchpad Black Cirque Glidepoint Technology ( GP160U-121 )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for an alternative input device for my desktop setup since i was developing carpel tunnel with my mouse. For a while a trackball worked, but the pain merely switched to my elbow.
Since i was so used to the touchpad on my laptop, I started looking for one. The Adesso Easycat is pretty brilliant and works well and has solved my problems for now. I use it in conjunction with a regular mouse (a MS Intellimouse) and switch back and forth as needed. For most things I never have to reach for the Intellimouse at all. The Adesso is very programmable and can do all that the five-button Intellimouse does.
Some observations on the Adesso Easycat USB model:
-Its pretty thin and small and looks quite nice. The price isnt bad considering Adesso pretty much has a monopoly on USB touchpad devices.
-It does not ship with a driver, its supposed to be plug-n-play. HOWEVER, TO USE THE ADVANCED FUNCTIONS on it you DO need to download the driver from Adesso. Otherwise you miss out on a lot of functions and personalization features. The driver can be downloaded from the Adesso website (http://www.adesso.com/products_detail.asp?productid=272).
-Once you have the driver installed, you can customize it in every possible way - sensitivity, reprogram buttons, orientation, etc. It has a very wide variety of features including: horizontal/vertical scrolls, zoom, Browser forward/back buttons, left and right clicks as taps, drag, etc. On top of that, three 'buttons' are customizable (both buttons plus a 'click area'). (the reviewer below who complained that it was too sensitive for him probably did not know that you can install this driver and adjust it).
-On my setup, I had to reduce the sensitivity/speed of the left-click tap feature before it registered correctly.
-I placed mine right under my spacebar, with a piece of velcro. Its brilliant and works and feels more or less like my laptop's touchpad. For most things I never reach for the regular mouse anymore. its very intuitive once you've set it up the way you like.
In sum: It wont cure all your problems, but as an alternative and unique input device it will make your life a bit easier.

Kensington Orbit Optical Trackball Mouse 64327 Review

Kensington Orbit Optical Trackball Mouse 64327
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using an Expert mouse for 7 years (and a Turbo Mouse on my Mac before that), but finally the left click button has expired. I decided to give this trackball a try since it was an optical.
It is well made, and has a nice heft. However, I am disappointed for several reasons. First is the ergonomics. The ball is significantly smaller than the Expert Mouse's, which is makes precise control more difficult. But more significantly, the relationship between the trackball and the buttons is poorly done. When I positioned my hand for optimal trackball control, I found it difficult to double-click quickly and would have to move my hand again. The buttons need to be more towards the user's wrists.
But the biggest complaint is the stalling, reported in a previous review. I don't think it's dirt--I think it's the pattern on the trackball. There is a cool pattern of silver and black swirls, except at one spot. This spot is black, patternless area about 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) in diameter, and I think the optical sensor has difficulty in picking up movement in that area. Every time it stalls, I look at the ball and note that this area is over the sensor. Microsoft optical trackballs are completely covered with a dense pattern.
Yes, it is only 1/3 the cost of the Expert Mouse. But all these complaints aren't a reflection of its lower price, but rather, design flaws.

Wow Pen Joy Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse Black By Ergoguys Review

Wow Pen Joy Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse Black By Ergoguys
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a bit of a mouse junkie, I have purchased about 10 mice/trackball in the last 2 years. I am in search of the best and most usable mouse for work. I am on the computer 12+ hours a day most of the week.
I will rank this mouse a close #1 for these:
1. Very lite, easy to move.
2. Excellent angle, not as upright as the "Evoluent VM3R2-RSB Vertical Mouse 3" which I also have in my arsenal of mouse.
3. The back and forward buttons are easily reachable with the thumb.
4. Easy to click.
5. Thumb area has a hook area where your thumb can sit which the Evoluent doesn't have is a great plus+
6. The mouse look nice, perfect blend of shiny and dull rubbery areas for better control.
7. Overall feeling of my hand and arm don't feel tired after a full days use, that is very important to me.
The mouse feels like it should be held with a full palm, but my hand is too big and misses the buttons, therefore this is the only downside, I have found a position that is comfortable and doesn't set the side of my hand scraping the desk (like the Evoluent did).
One note: This is my true #1 input device: Kensington Turboring which has been discontinued & mine broke is the best trackball I have used. I wish Kensington made it again. My thumb was rarely used which I believe can cause most of the strain on the hand and arm.
UPDATE: After 1 year of use, the mouse is still my daily driver. I tried a different mouse (3M Ergo which was a fail). The mouse still works great, the only downside after 1 year of use is the scroll wheel now makes a squeaking sound when used, not unbearable but can get annoying if the room is quiet.

3M Ergonomic Mouse, Optical, USB/PS2 Compatible, Small Size, Black (EM500GPS) Review

3M Ergonomic Mouse, Optical, USB/PS2 Compatible, Small Size, Black (EM500GPS)
Average Reviews:

I felt the difference in my right wrist instantly. According to websites, "Ergonomic design keeps the arm positioned for natural, comfortable movement. It is clinically proven to reduce muscle strain and discomfort associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and repetitive stress injury. The 3M Ergonomic Mouse is compatible using any USB port computer."
Ever notice that Gamers don't have carpel tunnel syndrome like most typists even though they likely spend more time at the computer? Well, 3M noticed! Your wrist sits on this ergonomic mouse like it does on a video game joystick. The weight of your hand is no longer carried by your wrist. Rather, your hand is relaxed on the mouse.
The relief in pressure on your wrist is instant. The cost may seem high, but it's less than a chiropractic appointment. Comes in 2 different sizes (small/medium and medium/large). This is a RIGHT handed mouse. You can program the left/right clicks if you are left handed, but the "joystick" is angled, so it's not as wonderful if you are a lefty.
Added note: The above review was written 2 years ago. It has been 3 years that I have been using this mouse. My wrist pain is completely gone. This mouse is so worth it. That being said, it is a P.O.S. as others have mentioned: the mouse does not travel well (it breaks if not protected in your computer bag) and breaks when dropped on hard surfaces -- I put a carpet under my desk and bought a glue gun to cut down on mouse costs. After gluing them back together, 3 have acquired the "double click" disease. Even with these drawback, I still feel that this mouse is worth it. I have purchased 8 over the past 3 years - I now keep one at work, one on my desk at home, and a "floater" for my home laptop that moves from room to room but does not leave the house unless carefully wrapped in it's original box. For "daily travel", because the 3M mouse has helped my wrist heal, I am now able to use a regular mouse, so I now keep a regular mouse in my backpack.
