It is my good fortune to use a Logitech MX700 mouse at work and a Microsoft Wireless Optical (Steel Blue) mouse at home. Like many reviewers, I initially found them both to be too large and heavy. But after making the transition, a "standard" size mouse now seems small, awkward, and toy-like. Of the two, the MX700 is noticeably heavier. However, one should consider that it is an ultra precise pointing device, so not only is the weight comfortable once one has gotten used to it, but it is also an aid in performing precision work (just as professional photographers often prefer heavier cameras over lighter units). I have been using the MX700 for over a year and the MS mouse for about two months now. I had no installation problems with either unit and have experienced no problems in their operation. I have not yet had to replaces the batteries of either. I find both to be smooth, accurate, and error free. I am not a gamer, so I cannot speak to the appropriateness of either unit for such use. One distinction between the two is that the MX700's scroll wheel gives a ratchet-like click while the MS mouse is unbelievably smooth. Such preferences are highly subjective, but I prefer the feedback of the MX700's click. My major complaint with the MS mouse is that it's "glide" on the mousepad is not very smooth, no matter what mousepad or surface is used. I have gotten used to this, but if the prices were equal, this issue would weigh heavily against the MS mouse.
There is much to like in both of these units and the purchase choice could hinge on either personal preference or on cost factors. My "price is no object" winner is the Logitech MX700, based on my perception of superior performance, near perfect ergonomics, and the fact that it is rechargeable. However, at the time of this writing it is significantly more expensive than the MS mouse (75% more at Amazon.com). In my opinion one truly cannot make a bad choice in choosing between these units. I believe that the MX700 is absolutely the best mouse on the market, but the MS mouse is good enough to warrant consideration and to win the decision if money is an overriding issue.

I use this mouse at work where I do software development. The mouse is nothing exceptional when taking into consideration a Logitech mouse at the same price point. The MS Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 offers slightly more and no less than previous MS Explorer offerings. From a functional standpoint, this is a good thing. Ergonomically sound and as responsive as a wired counterpart, this mouse does well tracking on a mouse pad or table top but does have some trouble with a white reflective surface. I have not played any games with this mouse so I cannot attest to it responsiveness on that extreme but for everyday usage, it is beyond what is needed. The resolution of the mouse is excellent even on a fast setting. The range of the mouse is about 6ft which is fine if the mouse stays in front of the computer but does not work when across the room. This may be a problem for some but the mouse is never further than 1 ft from the receiver for me. Loses a star for having a shorter range which may be the reason you will not find the range advertised on the box.

After 19 months of use, the mouse was showing some signs of wear. While it still worked very well, it looked to me like the 4 pads on the underside of the mouse (where it contacts the desk surface) were beginning to wear and the mouse wasn't sliding quiet as buttery-smoothe as it did originally. I could have lived with this for a LONG time, but since these mice are so cheap (a little over $20), I decided to replace it. I replaced it with the SAME identical model because it is still a perfect mouse and I can't imagine anything I'd like better.
I don't really get the negative reviews for this mouse. It has worked flawlessly and has just the right functions and touch/feel for me.
(BTW, I was kinda lazy and tried to just substitute the new mouse for the old mouse, without replacing the receiver. That did not work; apparently the mouse is matched to its receiver. No problem ... it took an additional 5 minutes to crawl under the desk and unplug the old receiver from the USB port and plug in the new one.)
Here is my original review from Nov 2004:
I just received and installed this mouse. So, my rating does not reflect any experience with long-term use or durability.
My old Dell-branded Intellimouse was wearing out, so I bought a new Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (an optical mouse). It worked fine but I hated the feel of the wheel button. I am addicted to using the wheel button as a double click. The feel of the wheel button was very heavy, requiring a very heavy press, and so basically ruined its functionality as a double click button.
I set it aside and bought a new MS Standard Wireless Optical Mouse. Beware, the Control Panel Mouse setup lists 85 million different models of Microsoft mouse, but not this one. Indeed none of the drivers would work fully. I had to download a driver (Intellimouse 5.2) from the MS website, before I could fully configure this MS Standard Wireless Optical Mouse.
I really didn't want a USB connector (the Wireless Intellimouse Explorer came with an adaptor that allowed the USB connector to plug into the regular PS/2 mouse port on the back of the computer. I tried the adaptor on the new mouse but it didn't seem to work.) However, it works fine off of my USB hub and I guess I can live with whatever problems that may present. I may hang on to my old wire-connected mouse in case I need it for backup.
Also, this is your basic two-button+wheel mouse. It does not have the fancy extra side buttons of the Intellimouse Explorer and others 2.0. But I was not really interested in those anyway.
The new Standard Wireless Optical Mouse has a really nice light feel, better than any mouse I've owned. It performs smoothly and flawlessley and fits my somewhat-smaller-than-average hand very well.
They are dirt cheap and work beautifully. So go for it.

(More customer reviews)First off, i've tried over half a dozen wireless mice in the last five years. Every new one seems to claim that they're all lag free. That's not the case with me. I've even tried wireless mice up to a hundred dollars in price and even some Bluetooth mice. They are usually fine on a small laptop screen, but when you connect them up to a 24" LCD there is barely noticeable lag. It's so small that 95% of people would probably not notice it at all. It only seems to occur on large screens and it's a big enough annoyance to keep me from using a wireless mouse of any kind.
I heard about the new Blue-Track technology and just figured it was just a marketing thing and not really something new. I figured it was perhaps just an Optical mouse in disguise. After losing my receiver for my VX Revolution (which is a very good mouse) I needed a new mouse for my laptop with a small receiver. I read up about these and a almost went for the Mobile Mouse 5000 instead, but glad I didn't. I saw these on display at a local store and they were out of stock. I checked online and most every place was out of stock of them. I waited a week and my local store only got in the white version. After another few weeks I ended up driving a half hour just to pick up this mouse in black. Yes, I actually waited just so I didn't have to buy the ugly white version!
Instead of connecting it to my laptop I immediately hooked it up to my PC connected to a 24" display. I immediately noticed there was no micro-lag AT ALL. I was pretty impressed to say the least. It actually tracks just as well as my Logitech G5 that I was previously using. So far I have not installed any of the software on the disc, so I can not comment on that. I usually prefer not to if I can avoid it.
In my picture viewing software the mouse scroll wheel skips by pictures too fast, so that it's nearly impossible to scroll down one image at a time. I can fix the scroll speed in the software easily i'm sure. The scroll wheel itself is a bit too thin, but this is a laptop mouse, so it's not a big deal. The wheel just feels cheap and i've always preferred the Logitech wheels due to the clicking sound it makes when you scroll it. The auto-scroll on the VX revolution is a really nice feature.
Unfortunately the entire mouse feels cheap. It IS cheap, so that's not a big deal. It's not bad enough to make me want to not use it though. There is a rubber grip material on both sides of the mouse and i'm not sure why this was needed, since it's too smooth to begin with. It does however make the mouse look a bit better. It is a very well designed mouse and looks pretty nice.
I'm currently using this still on my desktop computer. As my main mouse it's a bit small, but for a laptop it's PERFECT. I actually liked the blue-track so much that I went out and bought the Wireless Mouse 5000 for my desktop. I didn't like that much (too big and heavy!) so I'm going to keep this for desktop use despite it being so small.
My suggestion to Microsoft is that they should make a higher quality version of this. One with a metal scroll wheel and better buttons. Pretty much like a top of the line model like the MX revolution. This actually tracks better then that mouse, so why not?It's the best tracking wireless mouse i've ever tried and the best mouse you can get for the price!
UPDATE: 3/2/2010
I love this mouse so much that I did end up buying two of them. One for my main computer and the second for my laptop. The nice thing about it when using it on a laptop is the receiver is so small you don't notice it. I tested the tracking on carpet, wood flooring and even glass and it was no problem. The most difficult surface for it to track on is tan leather. I often sit in my leather recliner while using my laptop and put the mouse on the arm rest (it's pretty wide). Sounds dumb, but it works! It's not even all that flat, but slightly curved! Occasionally after every 10 minutes the mouse starts to throw a fit and I have to switch to a different surface. Once I use it on a different surface for a few minutes and switch back, it's fine. It's almost as if the mouse re-learns how to track on the new surface. Very strange. I'm just amazed that it'd even work on such a surface to begin with.
The only minor negative i've found is that the battery doesn't last long. It's not even worth mentioning since batteries are so cheap. I've been through about two in a month. I've also noticed some stores charging more for some colors due to being hard to find!

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 7000 Mac/Win USB Review

(More customer reviews)This is my third MS wireless notebook mouse (see my uploaded product images). I also have the optical 3000 (original version with the 2 piece adjustable USB receiver that rotates - a design flaw in my opinion, as I will explain), and the laser 6000. I will briefly go over the differences between the three models.
Disclaimer: I am not a gamer; I use my laptop primarily for web browsing and office apps. I also have not installed the Microsoft drivers as I didn't want to interfere with the trackpad & trackpoint functionality on my laptop, so I cannot comment on the software or extra features that are available with the 4-way scroll wheel and additional buttons (on the 6000 and 7000).
The 3000 was a great wireless notebook mouse for its time, with long battery life, good ergonomics (for a portable mouse), and decent accuracy. After two years of use, it still works fine except the left and right buttons sometimes fail to register on light clicks, and require repeated forceful clicks to be acknowledged. The only other problem I have is with the 2 piece "J" shaped USB receiver design. While it seems like a good idea to be able to rotate the receiver for optimal reception, the design makes the receiver just flexible enough that it doesn't always stay put when snapped into the bottom of the mouse. It often becomes loose enough so that it stops engaging the "off" switch at the bottom of the mouse, causing the mouse to turn on and waste precious battery life. (Note: Microsoft later came out with a design revision that changed the USB receiver to a single fixed piece like in the 6000.)
Due to the problem with the USB receiver on the 3000, I relegated it to home use only and purchased the 6000 over a year ago to carry around with me. It adds: laser tracking, horizontal scrolling capabilities with the 4-way (now smooth) scroll wheel, and a (tiny) additional button on the left side of the mouse. However I felt that there was a reduction in ergonomics due to the flatter profile of the mouse, and the larger scroll wheel housing forces my fingers to spread apart more, resulting in a less comfortable feel. I was extremely impressed with the improved laser tracking though, so much so that I also upgraded my desktop mouse to a laser model. It's just much more sensitive than the LED optical pickup, and requires less movement to drag the pointer across the screen while retaining pinpoint accuracy.
I recently purchased the 7000 to replace the dying 3000, and it is an improvement over the 6000 in terms of ergonomics. It is slightly longer than the 3000 and 6000 (but has a smaller USB receiver than comes with either), and the scroll wheel housing takes minimal space now, so it feels better in my hand because I don't have to spread my fingers apart as much, and there is more surface area to rest my palm on.
The 7000 also adds a new right side button, and both side buttons are integrated into the smooth curve of the mouse making them easier to click than the tiny left side-only button on the 6000. There is a battery indicator light on the mouse now, which illuminates briefly after the USB receiver is detached from the mouse. In addition, the LED on the USB receiver now lights up whenever it detects motion from the mouse (it remains constantly on in the 6000). The 7000 retains the other great features of the 6000, making it a winning design in my opinion.
If you're a light mouse user, any of Microsoft's wireless notebook mice products will work fine for you. If you are a heavy mouse user though, you will appreciate the slight refinements Microsoft has added in the 7000.
P.S., Microsoft touts the 2.4GHz frequency of this mouse as an advantage over the older 27MHz technology, but it's probably more of a gimmick than anything as I've never had range problems with this or the older wireless mice. The good news is that this mouse doesn't appear to interfere with other 2.4GHz wireless devices in my house, and it works fine even though the USB receiver is on the other side of my laptop. I'm also running a Microsoft wireless laser desktop 6000 on my PC, an 802.11 router in my office, and various 2.4GHz/5.8GHz/DECT cordless phones throughout my house. I have yet to experience any sort of connectivity or interference issues with my wired and wireless electronics.

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - Slate Review

I've had this mouse for a couple of weeks and am very satisfied with it. There was no software installation. I simply plugged the wireless receiver into an available USB port, put a "AA" size battery in the mouse, and turned on the computer. The mouse started working just as Windows XP finished loading.
It may be a little small for really large hands, but it fits my hand (medium-size male) perfectly with my palm resting on a mouse pad for comfort. In fact, it feels better than most I've had in the past (desktop or laptop). And the mouse fits into a side packet of a laptop case very nicely. As others have pointed out, the USB receiver fits into the bottom of the mouse when traveling.
The buttons are shapped well, as are the rubber side grips. The two large buttons feel solid, but the center scroll button is a little noisy and doesn't feel as well made. But, that center button works as well as the other two.
Since I've only had it a couple of weeks, I don't know how long the "AA" battery will last yet. However, I'm using my laptop mainly as a desktop, used many hours each day, and the original battery is still going strong. To insert the battery, press the silver button directly below the "Microsoft" logo and the top pops off (the release button is designed to look decorative). At that point, one will immediately see the battery holder.
The wireless feature works flawlessly. In fact, if one had really good eyes, one could operate the computer from the other side of a room. Yes, I've actually tried that, with the mouse moving the cursor around the screen with no problems.
I just read one of the other reviews where a lag was mentioned. I've seen nothing of this. In fact, after reading that review, I sat here moving the mouse slowly, quickly, tiny movements, short movements, long movements, and so on, with no noticeable lag. The cursor moves exactly as the mouse moves.
All in all, I think anyone would be satisfied with this mouse.

UPDATE: I wrote the above in February 2005 and have continued to use the mouse since (now Aug 2006). It is still performing well and the battery mentioned in the review above lasted through about 2.5 months of routine everyday use. I have since purchased a second mouse for my desktop computer, which is also working fine after about four months. The following is in response to issues raised by other reviewers.
To Edwin A. Pell III (New York), the mouse fits identically in either a left or right hand. To reverse the buttons, open the "Mouse" control panel and select "other pointing devices" in the drop-down menu listing your laptop's touchpad.
Again, to anyone wanting to ADJUST MOUSE SETTINGS, use the "other pointing devices" selection in the "Mouse" control panel.
To A. Mazakov (Fairfax, VA), the mouse is not sealed shut. The screws are located under the four black adhesive feet on the bottom of the mouse. Pry the feet off with a knife and stick them back on when finished with your modification.
To Denis Dolgachev (Ann Arbor, MI), you do not have to disconnect the mouse each night. The mouse enters a battery saving mode when no movement is detected for some time, allowing batteries to last upwards of two to three months (depending on usage) with a continous connection. In other words, you really only need to disconnect the mouse when you want to move or store the computer.
Those mentioning lags, delays, or choppy movement should check the "Mouse" control panel settings or for things interfering with USB devices. When setup and operating properly, there is no latency behavior whatsoever with this mouse. Movements are fine and precise. The only normal delay is in the split second when the mouse recovers from the battery saving mode after periods of inactivity.

(More customer reviews)After the wheel on my old MS mouse started getting a little stiff, I decided it was time for a new mouse. I tried a high end Logitech mouse (I think the 1100) but just didn't care for the ratcheted wheel so I decided to stick with MS.
Positives: There are plenty of positives about this mouse mentioned here, so I won't cover many of them. I did like the contour of the mouse. The wheel spins freely and easily. All of the buttons, including the wheel are easy to press and have a nice feel.
Negatives: As others have mentioned, the mouse is difficult to pick up. You (and I) wouldn't think this would be as big of a deal as it turns out to be (at least for me and others that have mentioned it here). You end up gripping it between your thumb and the tip of your little finger. It has to be a fairly firm grip based on the sloping contour of the mouse, and, crazy as it may sound, my little finger is actually getting a little sore. Another small thing that really got to annoy me was the forward and back buttons. Because of their placement and sort of upward angle you depress them with, you end up lifting the left side if the mouse up a little, making the experience a little less firm. Maybe I'm the only one that this annoys. The back button was a little to recessed for my taste, also making it a little more difficult to push.
In the end, I decided to spray a small amount of WD-40 around the wheel in my old mouse (I was going to throw it out anyway, so what the heck right?) and it spins like new. I really wanted to like this mouse, but I just can't. Its a great quality mouse, but just not for me.

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000 Review

(More customer reviews)Microsoft should rename itself Microhard. All of Microsoft's hardware (keyboards and mice, etc.) i've ever owned have been great, including the Presenter Mouse 8000. But the software that comes with it and the documentation are just horrific.
The mouse comes with a piece of paper that warns you to NOT use the install CD that comes with the mouse and instead go to Microsoft's web site for the latest software. So why didn't they just remove the CD from the package if they don't want you to use it??? When you go the web page that it tells you to go to for the software download, you find yourself on a page for Windows Vista support, which is NOT where you want to download the mouse driver from. A quick search for Intellipoint 6.02 (which the piece of paper claims you need) on Microsoft's web site turns up nothing. It turns out that 6.02 no longer exists. The current valid version is 6.1. Anyway, here's the correct software you need to download:
The installation of Intellipoint 6.1 seems painless enough, until you reboot your computer and find out that it has completely wiped out your touchpad driver and your touchpad no longer works the way it used to. As with all versions of Intellipoint, it is too stupid to figure out how to co-exist with other pointing device drivers. But at least the previous versions used to warn you that it wipes out the existing drivers. This version simply wipes them out w/o giving you any warnings or options to cancel the installation. Fortunately the touchpad driver for my sony sz360 IS smart enough to figure out how to work with Intellipoint. So after downloading the touchpad driver from Sony and re-installing it AFTER installing Intellipoint, both the touchpad and the mouse drivers now work.
If your laptop doesn't have built-in bluetooth and you're relying on the bluetooth transceiver that came with the mouth for wireless connection, then you're all set. Plug the transceiver into a USB port and you're all set to go. BUT if you want to utilize your notebook's existing bluetooth feature, the mouse has NO DOCUMENTATION on how to do that. And there is NO DOCUMENTATION on microsoft's web site whatsoever on this mouse. So after an hour or so of playing around with it, i finally figured out what to do:
1. Turn the mouse on
2. Using the tip of a pen or any other sharp tipped object, press and hold the little button below the power light on the bottom of the mouse for 10 seconds. This should make the power light alternate between green and red, indicating that the mouse is in a "discoverable", or "connectable" state.
3. Open the bluetooth manager that comes with your laptop and click on "connect to new hardware".
your computer should now find the mouse and everything should work.
Once you get past installing the software and figuring out what's missing in the documentation, the mouse works great! Ergo is not nearly as comfortable as Microsoft's full sized mice, but given its compactness and all the features it managed to pack in, it's hard to complain.

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - Winter Blue Review

I've had this mouse for a couple of weeks and am very satisfied with it. There was no software installation. I simply plugged the wireless receiver into an available USB port, put a "AA" size battery in the mouse, and turned on the computer. The mouse started working just as Windows XP finished loading.
It may be a little small for really large hands, but it fits my hand (medium-size male) perfectly with my palm resting on a mouse pad for comfort. In fact, it feels better than most I've had in the past (desktop or laptop). And the mouse fits into a side packet of a laptop case very nicely. As others have pointed out, the USB receiver fits into the bottom of the mouse when traveling.
The buttons are shapped well, as are the rubber side grips. The two large buttons feel solid, but the center scroll button is a little noisy and doesn't feel as well made. But, that center button works as well as the other two.
Since I've only had it a couple of weeks, I don't know how long the "AA" battery will last yet. However, I'm using my laptop mainly as a desktop, used many hours each day, and the original battery is still going strong. To insert the battery, press the silver button directly below the "Microsoft" logo and the top pops off (the release button is designed to look decorative). At that point, one will immediately see the battery holder.
The wireless feature works flawlessly. In fact, if one had really good eyes, one could operate the computer from the other side of a room. Yes, I've actually tried that, with the mouse moving the cursor around the screen with no problems.
I just read one of the other reviews where a lag was mentioned. I've seen nothing of this. In fact, after reading that review, I sat here moving the mouse slowly, quickly, tiny movements, short movements, long movements, and so on, with no noticeable lag. The cursor moves exactly as the mouse moves.
All in all, I think anyone would be satisfied with this mouse.

It is still performing well and the battery mentioned in the review above lasted through about 2.5 months of routine everyday use. I have since purchased a second mouse for my desktop computer, which is also working fine after about four months. The following is in response to issues raised by other reviewers.

Again, to anyone wanting to ADJUST MOUSE SETTINGS, use the "other pointing devices" selection in the "Mouse" control panel.
To A. Mazakov (Fairfax, VA), the mouse is not sealed shut. The screws are located under the four black adhesive feet on the bottom of the mouse. Pry the feet off with a knife and stick them back on when finished with your modification.
To Denis Dolgachev (Ann Arbor, MI), you do not have to disconnect the mouse each night. The mouse enters a battery saving mode when no movement is detected for some time, allowing batteries to last upwards of two to three months (depending on usage) with a continous connection. In other words, you really only need to disconnect the mouse when you want to move or store the computer.
Those mentioning lags, delays, or choppy movement should check the "Mouse" control panel settings or for things interfering with USB devices. When setup and operating properly, there is no latency behavior whatsoever with this mouse. Movements are fine and precise. The only normal delay is in the split second when the mouse recovers from the battery saving mode after periods of inactivity.

(More customer reviews)Wow! I had a 3 year old Microsoft mouse that worked great, but the USB transceiver was a real pain mainly because of the length of the thing. I broke one of my USB ports when I accidentally banged into the thing one day and on a laptop one can ill afford to lose a USB connector right?
Anyway, the transceiver on this unit is tiny, it only sticks out maybe a 1/4 of an inch so there's no probability of you damaging your machine by accident. And, it is extremely responsive, even more than the older design. The drivers loaded automatically in Windows 7 and I'm back in bidness. Both left and right buttons work as they should, and the scroll is perfect. Battery life is extended too with an On/Off switch. Works on any surface, the laptop frame, the couch, your jeans!
This purchase BTW was a necessity because of the crappy touch-pad on my new Asus K52jr-4, which was so erratic as to make the laptop virtually unusable. I see a lot of complaints on the web about this, but anyway I highly recommend this mouse, especially at the price which is about 1/2 of an equivalent Logitech device.
