(More customer reviews)It was right before Christmas when I bought this laptop and what caught my eye was the price considering everything you get for the price.
First of all the screen is a whopping 17.3 inch widescreen with an awsome color display. On top of the display is an integrated webcam with microphone which I have used from time to time without any problems. Just below the unit are the controls for power, sound, media controls and WIFI. The only button really is the power all of the other buttons are touch sensitive. Just below this you will find the speakers which are decent however the quality could be better but I am satisified for what I do with this laptop. Below the speakers is the full keyboard with numeric keypad just to the right and below this is the touch mouse pad. On the back of the monitor you will find a lighted HP logo and just below that you will find the removable battery.
On the left side of the laptop you will find the following ports...

On the front of the display you will find indication lights for the power, battery and hard drive and connections for connecting external headphone and a microphone.
After I purchase my unit I upgraded some of the components and actually replaced the 500GB hard drive with two 250 solid state drive which reduced the weight and temperature just a bit but the drives allows Windows to boot now in less that 15 seconds! I also upgraded the memory to 8GB and Windows 7 from the Home version to the Ultimate version.
This laptop works great for what I do which is studying (why I chose the large display), Internet & email, music, visual studio programming and from time to time I will watch a movie. I have not had any problems with the unit since I bought it, to me it does just what I need.
This is a very big laptop and you may have some challenges with weight, heat and finding an adequate bag to carry everything in and because I do significate traveling I wanted something close to what I have at home and this is very close and allows me to work, study or play very comfortly.
Remember laptops tend to be items where personal values dictate your needs so this may not be the unit for you. Also because these are mechanical devices you can experience problems while others do not so I always recommend dealing with a company that will stand behind their product.
Would I recommend you purchase this laptop? No, this is a decision that you must make.

Check it out -- 4.2 lbs, 1" thick, Magnesium case, 7200 rpm HDD, spectacular HD display, 4 GB memory, 320 GB Hard Drive, Iconic keyboard Windows 7, 4 USB ports, HDMI port, great WiFi,etc. etc. All for under $600! It's astonishing. One begins to wonder what truck they steal these off of. Yes, my title is correct, "Macbook Killer." Look at the two machines side by side -- they are pretty much the same thing. Yes, the Macbook Pro has a backlit keyboard, ok. But the DM3 has an HDMI port, which means I can attach it to my HDTV and play Neflix or Itunes movies, or youtube, etc. in High Definition. Sure, it has no optical drive, but folks, cd's and dvd's are becoming old technology, and being replaced by thumb/jump drives. Even software will be coming on these. Actually, the DM3 weighs almsot a pound less than a Macbook by eliminating the optical drive, and the advantages of using an external drive are many. Keyboards are almost identical, case is a toss up, display's are similar, windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard has its plusses and minuses going both ways. Yes, the Macbook is more powerful for high intensity graphics, but if you are using your computer as most people do, you will not notice the difference. But the knockout comes at checkout: It is less than 1/2 the price of a similarly configured 13" Macbook Pro!
It is so far superior to any netbook that there is no comparison there. Yes, it's not perfect. It does re-charge slowly, and the trackpad takes some getting used to. But it has so many fantastic features, when you factor in the price, it is the best value out there in ultraportable computing.
I have been using portable computers since the mid-eighties when they were 25 pounds with tiny monochrome screens floppy drives and cost $3000. Now for under $600, they are 1/6th the weight, yet 100 times as fast with 3000 times the storage and much more functionality. Think about how amazing this is! You will love this little machine.

If you want to know if this computer can get you online while on the road, listen to music, watch movies and just plain rock your world, then I am your man. I pulled this thing out of the box about 2 weeks ago and fired it up. I bought a router so I could use it anywhere at home. I have had no issues with it and the fact is it is much faster then my HP desktop. All preinstalled software works perfectly and the picture quality while watching video is perfect. The first night I had it I watched my DVD of Cool Hand Luke on it and was just amazed at the quality. Bottom line? I love it!

HP Pavilion DV2-1110US 12.1-Inch Entertainment Laptop Review

(More customer reviews)Just one week after I buy this notebook from Amazon, the price falls by $27 and Amazon refuses to match the price drop. Quite disappointing in that regard. I ordered this on a Wed, Amazon shipped on Sunday and it arrived on Tuesday with free shipping. So that was good.
On to the notebook. First the pros:
Build quality is good and it feels expensive compared to most sub $500 note/netbooks.
Large keys on the keyboard while not as spacious as a regular keyboard works better than than those from Acer that use the chicklet size keys. One of the reasons why I chose this over the Acer Timeline series.
Screen is bright and sharp.
Small compact and lightweight since it doesn't have a built-in DVD drive (uses an external drive). Design looks clean and modern with none of that clunky look from the low end Lenovos or Toshibas.
Uses Vista 64 bit edition
Has HDMI port to plug into HDTVs
Dedicated graphics processor and memory.
Now the cons:
Battery life is average 2-3 hours
Uses single core AMD Athlon Neo processor which is underpowered for Vista. There're occasional lags when running basic things like browsers, Word, etc. The CPU is maxed out at 100% most times.
The initial applications and drivers installed seem to make the notebook run really slow. I tried to watch videos on Hulu.com and they were jerky and slow. After installing updated video drivers and IE8 and Firefox, it worked better. Strange for a notebook professing to be an "Entertainment" notebook to be that bad at video until the drivers were updated. Despite the dedicated graphics processor and memory, video performance is just average and can a bit slow at times.
Bloatware. There are several but not too bad.
HP MediaSmart: this is pretty useless since the notebook already has Windows Media Center. The software itself is nothing great and eats up additional memory and CPU cycles.
Bottom line: This notebook is just barely able to run Vista 64 since the CPU is underpowered. It's a compromise between a full blown notebook and netbook since it has a decent size hard drive and screen. To make it perform better, you'll have to remove all the bloatware and unnecessary applications, and download the latest software updates and drivers. I'll be upgrading to Win 7 when it arrives so hopefully, that'll improve the performance further. Also probably look into upgrading the 2gb ram to 4gb.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this laptop on the HP website, even though the model number is not the same (mines is DV4-1300), it has all the same exact features as this model, and looks physically the same. So far so good I haven't had any problems. It's packed with features, and the best part is, that it's affordable. I got my laptop for $701.00, of course this was with the use of a coupon, and a student discount, plus the shipping was free, not only that, but I got free upgrades on the memory and hard drive. I think this is the perfect laptop for a student, because it's not that heavy and you can easily take it with you where ever you want. I also love the 14" screen it's not too big, but it's not too small, to me it's the perfect screen size on a laptop. The fan is a little noisy at times, but it's not a major concern. It also gets quite hot on the bottom, but I think most laptops do. The battery life I found to be so-so, not the best, but not bad either.

Sony calls it's P-series a laptop too, but I think sony p-series is a toy, and cannot replace my laptop, while hp mini 2140 surely can.
Technically it's like most other netbooks on the market: intel atom n270 1.6 Ghz 533mhz FSB, 1-2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, GMA 950 graphics, Wi-Fi b/g/n(draft), BT 2.0+EDR, 10/100/1000 ethernet. It has some strange resolution, non-standart 1024x576 instead of 1024x600. But I didn't notice much difference because of those 24 pixels. Perhaps it was the only way to keep it inside the same chassis as hp mini 2133. Screen is glossy, it could be also good and bad thing about this model. They made very minor changes from old chassis. One is less noticeable but yet important change is side vent design. Side vent holes were placed vertically in old 2133 and as a result, when you place it on soft surface they can be covered from bottom. In 2140 they placed them horizontally, and it increases the side vent clearance from the floor and it has more space at the bottom and less chances to be covered when placed on soft surface. You better check pictures.
Vista runs fine on it.
I've been searching a lot, read many reviews and ended up with a few models to choose from before buying 2140:

Kohjinsha SX
Asus eee 1000HE
HP mini 2140
Sony was out because of it's style. It's more suitable who those who don't care much about productivity but rather for style and look. Yes it looks perfect, it's glamor but I don't think I'd be able to accomplish my daily tasks on it.
Kohjinsha SX is still my favorite one, but it's price is very high. HP wins with it's price here.
Asus eee 1000HE has new cpu intel atom n280, the only netbook for the moment that can afford it. Unfortunately they placed it all in almost the same chassis as in 1000HA, which looks cheap. All plastic. Because of the same reason I skipped over samsung nc 10 and acer aspire 1.
In 2140 improved screen size with the same chassis as it's predecessor 2133. They moved speakers to the bottom of the screen and made screen bigger, while keeping the chassis same size.
I was a bit confused why they didn't put n280 in it. Perhaps it takes too long in huge companies like HP to do some design changes and implement latest technologies in their products.
I had some doubts about this model. It's predecessor 2133 was very poor in means of heat and power consumption and noise. It was awful. I was afraid that this model will repeat those mistakes. But it uses intel atom n270 instead of VIA in 2133 which has less power consumption. So i decided to give it a try.
After buying this thing I found out that:
BAD THINGS FIRST:
1) It cannot be easily upgraded. In order to charge it with SSD I would probably have to disassemble it. eee solves it much easier. (Update: recently, when upgrading it to SSD I found out that it's not that easy, you just got to be careful when pulling keyboard in order to reach disk drive).
2) Battery is not as long as eee or samsung nc. Extra 6 cell battery looks ugly and makes 2140 non-transportable
3) Screen is a bit too high brightness. You need to adjust brightness from control panel to make it normal. It's fixable.
4) Weight is not very well balanced. Back side is heavier than front
5) Charger is big enough, bigger than eee's charger. It's a brick like in normal laptop.
6) Doesn't include any accessories but charger, CDs and manual. At least one cheap case would be fine, before I buy normal case. All eee have slim case in box.
GOOD THINGS
1) it has the best keyboard in the world. I'm so surprised with it's superior quality and comfort that I think it's even more comfortable for me to type on HP mini 2140 than on desktop keyboard or any other laptop/umpc/netbook keyboards (I tried a lot).
2) excellent design. comparable to sony viao, maybe better but not worse than that. It doesn't look like budget netbook. HP looks like >1000$ model for much less price.
3) It's fully functional laptop. It has normal resolution (1024x576) for 10'' screen. I do not understand how one can put 1280x768 on 8'' screen like sony did. You can't see anything but videos on sony p-series screen.
4) It has express card 54 slot, which many comparable netbooks doesn't have. I will place 3G card in it. I don't like 3G card pulling out of USB port, prefer it to be mostly hidden in express slot.
5) It still weights only ~1.2kg. SSD version maybe even lighter
4) this model is much cooler, quiter and battery lasts longer than on hp mini 2133. With web browsing, wi-fi on you can get up-to 3.5 hours. More intensive applications - 2.5-3 hours. I tried it with the following applications running: SQL developer, Netbeans IDE, Outlook, google chrome with 3-4 tabs open while windows update installing updates in the background and heavy network and HDD IO and it lasted about 2 hours. I think it's OK. Not as much as eee but OK.
5) I read in reviews that some people were complaining about touchpad, and that buttons are not comfortably placed. I didn't notice that. I think they did a good compromise by placing buttons on the left and right sides of the touchpad, while keeping touchpad itself big enough. Buttons are comfortable for me.
6) It's built up very good. Feels like hp mini 2140 is one solid peace of metal and plastic.
6) Ergonomics. Everything seems to be there where you expected it to be. Every inch is used very effectively, no wasted space here, as a result dimension are very good, looks much smaller than eee pc 1000 series.
7) hp drive guide 3d technology, maybe not important for most of the people, but it's good one. Parks HDD headers when it senses movement or falling. Can save data one day, or maybe not :) It depends.
8) Finally!!! HP engineers managed to optimize OS and not overload it with HP software and removed loads of icons from tray and startup programs that used to be in all OS's preinstalled by HP and other vendors. They did a good job this time, and I spent less time optimizing and updating OS.
Being honest I would give this laptop 4.5, since I didn't have such a chance I choosed to give it 5 instead of 4.

EDIT: 27 Sep 2009
After half year of use I can say that this netbook is very durable. Yesterday, The child hardly pressed on the lid and on the keyboard while netbook was open and left unattended. As a result lid opened up on 180 degrees though normally lid does not open more than 130 degrees (it's mechanically blocked). There was a crack noise and lid did not close after that. I thought that plastic top was broken but actually only metal frame was damaged. I closed the lid, pressed it hard several times, so that metal frame becomes to it's original state and it is fine now. Lid opens and closes normally, as it was before. Plastic frame did not crack, and lid movement is still solid. No visible evidence of recent operation.

(More customer reviews)I'm a big fan of the HP HDX series. It sits at the top of their Pavilion line and is one of the best built notebooks sold in the retail channel. It's aimed solidly at consumers looking for a high end entertainment laptop. Because the material quality is well above average it's not necessarily the best value: you can get these specs for less money, just not with the same build quality. This is a good choice for someone looking for a notebook that can handle more than just web browsing. The biggest drawback of this HDX model is a slightly under powered battery and a little more weight (though again, much of that lies with the superior frame and shell).
Let's go over the specs:
CPU: The Core 2 P7550 runs two separate cores at 2.26GHz and has 3MB of on chip cache. The Core2 line is the best notebook CPU out there today and and this model this is about in the middle of the mobile Core2 line in terms of performance. At 35W it sits in the same thermal envelope as much slower chips (such as the Mobile Pentium line). Having two cores means you can run your full internet security suite and not have your computer freeze up for events like a virus scan.
MEMORY: 4GB of DDR2 RAM is plenty and the 1066Mhz memory speed is plenty fast.
HDD: The 500GB HDD has plenty of storage, even if you like to do video encoding. The 5400RPM speed isn't the fastest but it is more reliable that 7200RPM drives.
DISPLAY: The 16in (1366×768) display looks great. Like a lot of glossy screens it's a little more susceptible to glare, but in the home it looks fantastic. There's also a HDX line with an 18inch screen.
GRAPHICS: The Nvidia GeForce GT 130M w/ 1GB of DDR2 used in this notebook is a large step up from the standard Intel 4500 graphics. It is basically a Nvidia 9600 on a newer (55nm) manufacturing process. With this notebook you can play newer 3D games at reasonable resolutions. This is still a step down from being a true "gaming notebook" but if you want to be able to do occasional 3D gaming on it you can (I should note that online 3D games like World of Warcraft run fine on this chip). If 3D gaming is important to you I would suggest looking for a notebook with something more powerful (either the Nvidia GTS and GTX line or the ATI 4800 or 4600 series). It is more than enough to handle your home entertainment needs. The only downside is it uses more power and will drain your batter faster than the standard 4500.
AUDIO: The Altec Lansing with Dolby Home Theater and Sub-Woofer is part of what sets this notebook apart. The sound is fantastic. It is rich and deep and has none of the tininess usually associated with notebook sound.
DVD/CD DRIVE: Uses the "HP Super-Multi Drive" which means it can read and write pretty much any CD or DVD format out there except for Blu Ray. The lack of Blu Ray is the main ding on the "entertainment" specs of notebook. You can get Blu Ray on other HDX-16 models or by custom ordering it from HP.
BATTERY: The 6 cell battery falls a little short. With this size screen and the upgraded graphics chip you really want a 12 cell battery (which some HDX models have). If you expect to be plugged in most of the time you probably don't care. If you expect to travel with this the 1.5-2 hour typical performance (3 max) will disappoint you.
WEIGHT: Coming in a 7.06 lbs this is slightly heavier than the next step down from HP (a DV6 comes in around 6.5 lbs) but that's mostly improved framing and heavier grade plastics. This notebook is solid.
WIRELESS: The usually Intel 5100 A/G/N supports the most common standards ("A" and "G") along with the new "N" standard. You should have no trouble connecting to wireless networks.
PORTS: This notebook has all the usual ports (USB2, Ethernet, VGA, headphones, microphones, eSATA) and a HDMI port. Thanks to the included remote you could watch DVDs on your TV (if it supports HDMI) in relative comfort. I'm not sure why you would want to foor DVDs, but if you want to use Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Video On Demand, it makes it easy to download and watch movies on your TV.
So if you want a solid notebook with good video and sound this is well worth taking a lot at, especially if you want to download movies. If you are looking for a gaming notebook keep looking. If you want Blu Ray keep looking. If you just want to surf the web you don't need a computer this powerful unless you want really good sound. If battery life is important look for a model with a 12 cell battery (or custom order one from HP).

(More customer reviews)I just got this notebook to send off to college with my daughter. I've been in the computer business for over 35 years, and this is one of the best PC notebooks I've ever had (I'd give it 5 stars, but it is not a Mac Book - my daughter prefers Windows).
But I have owned a bunch of PC notebooks over the years, including several other HPs, and this is the best PC notebook I've ever owned - a really excellent mix of size, performance, and style. Aside from its technical specs, it really is attractive for a notebook - way to go HP design team!
My daughter is very fussy about keyboards and trackpads, and to win her approval is a huge endorsement. I've been watching the ads for PC notebooks knowing college starts this fall, and this HP dm4 really caught my eye. I'd been considering the 8 hour ASUS machines, but this 6 hour HP was enough better in other specs to seal the deal. For a PC, the claimed 6+ hours (over 4 in reality) is way better than almost any other PC notebook (although Mac Books are much better).
Compared to most other PC notebooks, this one wins because: very light (other reviews say it is one of the very lightest 14" notebooks), fast (Intel i5 mobile, not just an i3), 4Gigs RAM, 500Gig hard drive (and 7200rpm, not 5400!), fingerprint scanner (and it really works well and seamlessly - encourages good security), bluetooth, WiFi N, HDMI + VGA, eSATA, Windows 7 64-bit, great battery life, great size and weight. Just right mix. (Just a note - it uses shared graphics, just fine for anyone except hard core gamers - probably improves battery life.)
SUMMARY: A great balance of price, performance, and style. Should easily last four years of college.
PROS: Size, weight, style, CPU performance, fingerprint scanner, memory
CONS: screen size (beautiful LED display, but at 768 pixels high, a bit low - wish it were 900), really loaded with crapware (but that is typical of almost any PC notebook today, especially HP - check out pc decrapifier)

(More customer reviews)This is my first laptop and I think I made a great choice. Firstly, I bought it directly from hp.com and with the rebates I had, saved two hundred dollars. Secondly, I got free 2 day shipping and it arrived on time.
The first thing I like about it is that the color is not the cheap gold look you see in the picture. I love the keyboards on HPs Entertainment and Special Edition notebooks. They do not feel cramped. There have been many cmplaints about the glare of the keyboards on this and the black and chrome models. So far, I have had no problems with the glare. Yes, I agree with the other reviewer, that the keys are hard to see in the dark. I would assume that would be the case for any laptop unless it is backlighted and this is not. It is light (wtihtout the battery), the speakers generate nice sound, it finds wireless networks instantly, and I actually like Vista.Just a note, read up on accessing the hidden administrator account if you are new to Vista. It has some serious security that will keep you from making even the most basic adjustments, including removing the bloatware.
HP has done a wonderful job in including set up tutorials and online registration processes. The size is fantastic and screen is beautiful. I have not attached any peripherals up to it yet, so I cannot really comment on that.
Cons:
The battery life is short.. maybe an hour and a half even when it in the recommended power save mode. It has a lighted HP emblem on the back of the cover that uses resources. HP could have added the backlighted keyboard instead! The verdict is still out on there telephone tech service! I have had better experience with there chat support.
The comp does sound like it is working overtime anytime I burn a CD and the vibration generating from drive is a bit too much for me to type at the same time.
This is a great laptop, esp. if you can get it for under $[...]. It has only some bells and whistles, so if you want built in bluetooth and a blueray player, you will have to go up a model. Otherwise, no reason not to consider this one.

With this configuration, You can tell that I am neither a gamer nor a professional film editor; hence a lightning fast firing processor was not what I was after. But my typical work session would include sending and receiving email, uploading, editing and processing photos in Photoshop, downloading movies and watching them, and occasionally using Skype while surfing the net, and at the same time, cleaning and defragmenting the hard disk in the background all at the same breath!
Such seemingly mundane tasks, while appearing innocuous enough, exact a heavy toll on the processing core of the chip; so a lightning fast dual only core would behave like a clueless cheerleader with two left feet; on the turf, she is cute and nimble because she memorizes her routine well, but on the dance floor, she is a klutz who can't chew gum and synchronize her dance movements with her dance partner at the same time!
Enter Quad Core processing power 2.6 GHz; though not the extreme speed that you might want if you were a gamer, it has a superb capability for multi-tasking with ease and agility; and that is where this powerhouse comes in handy; enough speed for most if not almost all applications, and enough multi-tasking processing power for four fraught applications simultaneously with ease and without klutzy performance or staggered inter-lapping allocation of processing power.
The 2 MB level2 cache proved readily and immediately, upon initial use, that it is crucial for the smooth procession of processed data throughout 4 cores, thereby augmenting the capabilities of the processor.
And the 6 GB of memory are the beauty behind this simple yet elegant power-capable configuration, while the fact that the motherboard is capable of handling 16 GB memory expansion put my mind at ease against design obsolescence when faced with Microsoft's unpredictable quirks for memory hungry OS development.
The NVIDIA GeForce 9100 Graphics Card, though integrated as is the custom in this price range, is another extra component that adds to the performance by freeing the processor from the burden of handling power-hungry graphics. An independent graphics card rather than integrated would probably have added about one point to the overall performance rating at about $50.00 added to the price, but then if you had no need for it, it would be an unnecessary expense. I am of the opinion that if your primary use includes a lot of photo and video editing it may be of benefit to you to spend about $50.00 for a powerful graphics card and install it yourself; it is a 5-minute simple job, otherwise the machine as configured is plenty powerful.
All in all, unless you are a gamer, my initial use has convinced me that this machine is very well designed, capable and indeed far superior for the typical workstation user than almost anything else out there within $100 price range, give or take, and bang for the buck, it is a hard act to follow.

hard to read texts and I do a lot of image PPs so 17" screen is just perfect for me.
The screen is bright thought it looks to be a little glossy. This is a typical Vista
machine so start up is a little slow but once it's loaded up,it's quite fast.
My several co-workers have HP laptops and I thought their PC's wireless connection was
a bit slow and that surfing on the net seemed to be also a bit slow.This is when they used my
Verizon wireless modem. I don't know what models they have but I thought that's what I should
expect from a current laptop.
Wrong! :) This machine's wirelss connection is quick and surfing online is quite fast.
That's probably because of wireless N and T-6500 Pentium chip. I was looking at T-4200
machine but I'm glad I didn't buy it. This maxchine is built for multi-task jobs and it
does an excellent job. I haven't burnt any CDs/DVDs because I usually do it with my desk top.
If you're looking at this machine,you will be happy to hear what I'm going say about heat.
I used this machine for 5 hours straight and this machine handled the heat very well.
Yes,I felt "some" heat from the bottom and from the screen but it's not alarmingly hot at all.
I know this because all my co-workers HP laptops get hotter than my machine.
This laptop comes with 3 GB memory and its maximum memory capacity is 4 GB. I feel that this type
of machine should be allowed to expand the memory up to 8 BG. It is already fast but you know,
I felt that HP skipped a design on this respect.
Paying a full price on this laptop is not for people on a budget like me, but I just happened to
find a good deal and for the price I paid,it's a steal.
HP G70-460US is an efficient,fast,quiet,cool-headed machine and I highly recommend it.

HP Mini 1115NR 8.9-Inch Netbook - 3 Cell Battery Review

(More customer reviews)I had been looking at the mini laptops with solid state drives for a couple of months and picked up the HP Mini (Netbook) 1115NR a couple of weeks ago. I booted it up, began writing a text file, went online, and then it died. It had been on for about two hours. After some research online I found out that HP rushed this product to market and that the 'black screen of death' is a somewhat common problem. The machine will not boot up at all. The power light goes on, but that is it. Basically the flash drive gets corrupt and cannot be accessed. I returned the laptop and got my money back.

The touch screen capability and sleep look made me think it would be a great media server as well since everyone could run their iTunes libraries from it as well as feed movies to the TV and record with the TV tuner.
I've has it now for 5 months and:
1. Touch screen is no longer working properly and the available calibration tools can't fix the problem.
2. Keyboard stops responding intermittently and had to be replaced with a wired keyboard.
4. As another user (eclectic_in_CA) mentioned, if you launch the touchsmart then iTunes will not display properly. Also iTunes must be open in order for the touchsmart media player to be able to read your iTunes libraries, which then had the wrong album art attached to many albums.
I do like:
1. The size and brightness of the display
2. Once we learned not to open iTunes after launching touchsmart we all got along fine.
3. I currently have the touchsmart PC acting as my media server which feeds my PS3 and 2 TV's in addition to acting as a DVR to record from 1 of my direct tv receivers.
4. We can easily show pictures and videos to friends and family.
After it's all said and done, it delivered what it said it would....but not to full scale. You have to learn to work around it's glitches.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this netbook because of the small size, excellent price, long battery life, and great customer service that HP is known for.
As far as the computer goes...
The computer itself is very light weight and easy to tote around. Not too heavy in a purse or bag and the size it great for concealing what you're carrying, say on a city bus or train.
I'm not a big Winblows fan so I changed the OS to Linux Mint 8 and that gave me back around 8 or 10GB of space that the old OS was eating up. There is plenty of room on the hard drive for a mid-sized music collection, lots of files, and plenty of pictures with room to spare.
The keyboard is great, but lacks a home key, page up, and page down. The touch pad gives you the ability to double click or single click by touch and there is a button on the keyboard for a right-click action.
The AC adapter is plenty long for most tasks and the battery life is excellent.
The webcam is fairly low quality but for basic things, such as using Skype or other conferencing methods, it will do the job. Speakers and mic are great and produce good quality sound for a netbook.
Customer Service...
After having the 210-1030nr for only two weeks, my hard drive went bad. No drops, no spills, no crazy room mates, just went bad. I called HP customer service and they were excellent! They're sending me the shipping materials to send the computer back and are footing the repair bill for me. Great customer service, just like I expected.
The 210-1030nr would have earned that fifth star had the hard drive not gone bad on me. I know, however, that this is a rare occasion for a netbook and sometimes things are not made properly or other issues occur that are beyond my, or any one else's, control.
This HP has performed very well up until the hiccup with the hard drive. My boyfriend was very impressed with the machine, despite his initial aversion to it's small size; he was worried it would be fragile or flimsy. He will be purchasing one for himself very soon.

(More customer reviews)This is my first laptop and I think I made a great choice. Firstly, I bought it directly from hp.com and with the rebates I had, saved two hundred dollars. Secondly, I got free 2 day shipping and it arrived on time.
The first thing I like about it is that the color is not the cheap gold look you see in the picture. I love the keyboards on HPs Entertainment and Special Edition notebooks. They do not feel cramped. There have been many cmplaints about the glare of the keyboards on this and the black and chrome models. So far, I have had no problems with the glare. Yes, I agree with the other reviewer, that the keys are hard to see in the dark. I would assume that would be the case for any laptop unless it is backlighted and this is not. It is light (wtihtout the battery), the speakers generate nice sound, it finds wireless networks instantly, and I actually like Vista.Just a note, read up on accessing the hidden administrator account if you are new to Vista. It has some serious security that will keep you from making even the most basic adjustments, including removing the bloatware.
HP has done a wonderful job in including set up tutorials and online registration processes. The size is fantastic and screen is beautiful. I have not attached any peripherals up to it yet, so I cannot really comment on that.
Cons:
The battery life is short.. maybe an hour and a half even when it in the recommended power save mode. It has a lighted HP emblem on the back of the cover that uses resources. HP could have added the backlighted keyboard instead! The verdict is still out on there telephone tech service! I have had better experience with there chat support.
The comp does sound like it is working overtime anytime I burn a CD and the vibration generating from drive is a bit too much for me to type at the same time.
This is a great laptop, esp. if you can get it for under $[...]. It has only some bells and whistles, so if you want built in bluetooth and a blueray player, you will have to go up a model. Otherwise, no reason not to consider this one.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this with all the bells and whistles out of the gate, rather than worrying about customizing it and then upgrading later, because HP makes it so much less expensive this way. I had a lot of questions that weren't answered until I actually bought the thing, but I was happy with the answers once it arrived.
Facts: Comes with wireless A/B/G/N card and gigabit Ethernet. Shows up in Device Manager as an Atheros a/b/g/n dual-band wireless network module. The external antenna is connected to the system by a 2 to 3 foot cable so you can place it on a desk for better reception. The network card is a gigabit RealTek RTL8168C(P)-family.
The combination power light/on-off switch shines bright blue when on and amber when in sleep mode. The switch is located on the very top of the front panel of the computer on what is the top of the case, so it's very visible in a room without having to squat down or lean over to see it.
The system is fast with the quad-core and is already maxed out at its 8 Gb limit. There is a free PCIe slot (the wireless takes up one), a free standard PCI slot and a free PCI Express x16 for the video card that you'll eventually buy. With the standard graphics chip, you get a Windows Vista 3.5 Windows Experience Index with Vista SP1. There's also an IDE interface for a floppy on the motherboard, but no IDE for hard drives. The power supply is a 300-watt Lite-On.
You can add two more hard drives internally, plus a second optical drive. I think that you can put in a floppy drive where one of the additional hard drives would go and it would have front panel access. There are connectors on the motherboard for four additional SATA devices and there are four available Molex power connectors plus one for a floppy drive. There are no parallel or serial ports available. It's a USB world out there now. The included card reader, that is located in the top front of the case above the CD drive, uses drive letters F: G: H: and I: at all times. The front panel has a slide down cover that reveals two USB connectors and speaker and microphone connectors. There are also legacy PS/2 connectors for a keyboard and mouse on the lower back of the case.
I won't go into details about software other than to say that there aren't any backup disks provided, but they provide a wizard to make your own (B.Y.O.-DVD). The D: partition on the main hard drive is your recovery partition and all software is probably there in some compressed format. If you decide to remove an installed program, you may find difficulty reinstalling it without making the recovery disks first. Update: After owning the machine for several weeks I am now aware that the 3 DVD's that you create are only for a complete rebuild. You can't reinstall individual applications once they're removed.
Pros:
Everything comes with it except for an upgraded video card
Good expansion capabilities with USB and motherboard interfaces
Good DVD and CD burning software included, including Lightscribe
Cons:
Keyboard has non-standard layout above arrow keys for insert/delete, page up/down, etc. Touch typists won't like it.
I switched from my previous computer vendor to purchase this HP because of all the standard features. I'm not disappointed at all in the quality of build or performance. My only planned purchase for this fully-loaded system will be an upgraded graphics card to match the system's other hardware capabilities.
