Great specs and performance for the price. System is very responsive and I haven't had a hiccup yet. Only thing missing for me would be an integrated webcam and dedicated graphics memory but you get what you pay for and those features usually cost extra.

HP Pavilion dv6-3030us 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

HP Pavilion dv6-3030us 15.6-Inch Laptop
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Be careful when ordering/receiving this product from Amazon. I recently ordered a "new" HP dv6 3030us from Amazon.com, not some third party distributor. Let's just say it was not "new" when it arrived at my door. While all the correct plastic protector guards/shields were on the laptop, there were marks that it had been used before, and I am not talking about finger prints.
The top/screen portion of the laptop actually had spacing between two pieces of plastic, i.e. someone had used/abused this laptop and it was re-packaged and sent to me. There were also scratch marks and abrasions on the actual keypad portion. All of these indications make me believe that this laptop hadd been operated by someone else prior to my taking ownership. Overall I am very disappointed with this purchase and considering asking for my money back via product return.
I would recommend ordering the computer directly from HP's webiste. Alas, I needed mine pronto and the quickest HP could deliver was 12-18 days, or I would have done the same.
I will keep you up to date on any issues/problems if I do try to return the laptop.

Compaq Presario CQ61-410US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Compaq Presario CQ61-410US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

I just received this nice 15.6" notebook and I admit that I like it! The sound is great. The keypad is really handy when you need it. And the reponse of this computer is satisfying with windows 7 loaded.
However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did.
In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for $299.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook ($379.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook...

Palm LifeDrive Mobile Manager Review

Palm LifeDrive Mobile Manager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the Lifedrive one week ago to replace a sony Clie. The following comments are based on one week experience.
Pros:
1. New lifedrive manager software which in most cases obviate the need for hotsync. This is truly revolutionary.
2. Larger hard drive. Finally we are catching up with the rest of the world. You may be able to replace your iPod mini with this more versatile handheld.
3. Good voice recorder. I just got back from a meeting and recorded one whole days worth of talks from the back of a room with 60 people and record quality was quite good and no software bugs were noticed. In addition to the time allocated under your voice memo section, you can directly record to your hard drive allowing you to record more stuff.
4. This machine can store an enormous number of powerpoint presentations. This is a big plus for if you do any teaching e.g. quick review of a topic with a med student before a surgery.
5. Nice metallic finish. Looks better than cheap looking T5.
Cons:
1. Poor battery life. After a whole day of heavy use, the battery dies without warning.
2. Repeated powering down of the hard drive causing a few second delay in opening new applications. Annoying as hell!!!
3. No way to customize turning off the screen after a short period of inactivity. If you play chess on this machine, it becomes annoying. By the way, Hiarcs chess engine runs quite well on this machine(Downloadable for 39.99).
4. Adobe reader formats most documents well, but some with complex formatting turn into incomprehensible amorphous text.
5. Price. I don't understand why a piece of cheap looking electronics made in china should cost this much money.
6. No integrated cell phone or camera.
7. Some applications don't run on this device. I signed up for audible.com membership to get a $100 rebate. But so far I have been unable to make the audible manager recognize this device and download audiobooks to this device.
8. It is very disappointing palm decided to put the cheaper and slower WiFi. I suspect their next device will have the faster version.
9. Size. More bulky than other palm handhelds. Not a true shirt pocket device.
10. No headphone provided. Why can't they throw in a $10 headphone for this $499 device. I am using my old sony clie headphones which works fine.
Overall, 4 stars. I am sure I will find a lot more annoying problems as I use it more.

Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403) Review

Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse (930754-0403)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, I've been using this one for about a month now and it's definitely growing on me.
Here's the Pro's:
1. Wireless, no cords catching on anything no distance restrictions.
2. Good looking
3. Easy to set up, just plug it in and it works, installing the software is another issue I'll address in a second.
4. NIMH Batteries with a reciever/recharger, the power lasts forever, and simply placing the mouse in the reciever to recharge is a great idea.
5. Semi-customizable buttons may add diversity for some users (I haven't found it very useful with the applications I use.)
The Cons:
1. NOT FOR BIG HANDS!! The ergonomic design is, from what I can tell, aimed at people with small to medium sized hands. I however am 6'5" and have extra large hands that do not fit the ergonomics of this mouse at all, it was actually very uncomfortable at first, but I've slowly gotten used to it.
2. Glitchy control in some applications. From what I've read this issue has to do more with Logitechs software than with the mouse. I use a lot of Adobe and Macromedia products for Graphic and Web design and this mouse just doesn't seem to want to work well with any of them. Left clicking while holding short cut keys has lead to all kinds of strange and annoying results. (to many to list)
3. Limited programming, with my previous mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer) I had the option of programming each button to activate just about any command I could think of, with any key combination I could want, which made my shortcuts in design applications a breeze, that mouse would also change the button functions depending on which program I had open.
The Logitech is very limited in the options that can be tagged to a button and they are also global, meaning they have the same function in all programs no matter what.
Not a big con for most but it stands out for me as a designer.
4. Bad and intrusive software. While installing this software I was asked if I wanted to install Wild Tangent software, which I have found is connected to Gator Corp software (a spyware/adware service, basically a program that notifies it's owners when ever you click on a site that sells something so that they can pop up ads with similar products at their leisure on your computer) not cool!
After opting out of those two the Logitech software still installed Logitechs Adware application Logitech Desktop on my PC, and with it a couple of executables that caused numerous problems and hogged up my PC resources, this culprit came up in my task manager with the mysterious lable BackWeb-884760.exe (can't remeber the exact numbers). However after uninstalling the Logitech Desktop software all of my problems were solved.
So all in all a great mouse for people with average sized hands, yet sporting some bad software issues, for people with the money I would recommend having a look at the Microsoft opticle wireless first, compare the two for yourself and then make a decision.

I don't know about the other reviewer's experience, but I can say that I love everything about this computer. The screen is bright and the colors are vivid. I have listened to other laptop speakers, and these sound very good. The keyboard is wonderful to type on. I had to uninstall some bloatware, but that was expected. Will upgrade to a 12 cell battery as soon as I can afford to. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a well made machine. Read the specs listed above and you will find that this machine has everything you would want in a laptop or desktop replacement. Con: somewhat large and slightly heavy, but then again your going to carry it in a bag anyways!

Eliminate the black bars that appear when you're watching DVD movies or HDTV content when you view them on the HP Pavilion g60-230us notebook PC, which has a 16-inch screen with a true 16:9 aspect ratio. Pared down to the essentials, HP's G60 series is defined by minimalist lines. High-gloss reflective top cover and palm rest area surfaces contrast cleanly with matte surface everywhere else, and the streamlined look is enhanced with a color-matched keyboard and touchpad.
Chat face to face, or take pictures and video clips with the webcam and integrated digital microphone. Play games and enhance multimedia with the Intel GMA 4500M with up to 1309 MB of total available graphics memory. And enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process).
It offers dual-core productivity from its 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium T4200 processor for excellent multitasking. Other features include a 320 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum capacity), dual-layer DVD±RW drive (which also burns CDs), quad-mode Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n), 5-in-1 memory card reader, and pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1).
The Basics
Processor: The 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium T4200 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache (for a 2 MB total), and they have an 800 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Hard Drive: The generous 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC6400, 1 x 2 GB, 2 x 1 GB) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It also offers a fast 800 MHz speed. This notebook has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 16-inch WXGA high-definition screen, which has a widescreen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels--perfect for watching DVD movies the way they were meant to be seen. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M, which uses shared video memory (up to 1309 MB allocated from the system memory). This graphics card is built with Intel Clear Video technology, which delivers clearer, more detailed images by eliminating many of the jagged edges and video artifacts seen when viewing interlaced content and features powerful color control to ensure videos are not too dark, overly bright, or washed out. The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). It comes with the following external connectors:
3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
Analog video output: 1 VGA
1 headphone jack
1 microphone jack
5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
10/100 Fast Ethernet networking
56K modem (V.90)

HP Pavilion DV4-2161NR 14.1-Inch Laptop (Digital Plaid) Review

HP Pavilion DV4-2161NR 14.1-Inch Laptop (Digital Plaid)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had have this computer for a month now, so here goes nothing:
Pros:
- Excellent design
- 4GB Ram, enough for most tasks
- 500GB hard drive, for me that's enough for now
- Small size and little weight (even lighter when DVD is removed, which is an excellent feature in itself)
- Windows 7 (better than Vista, we'll see about XP)
- EXCELLENT PRICE
Cons:
- Battery life is about 2 hours, bound to decrease within 6 months, not on par with most other laptops this size.
- Touchpad really has a mind of its own on ocassion.
- Glossy design is beautiful, but it's also a fingerprint magnet
- Opening it is a cumbersome task, not really bad, but a little.
- Windows 7 "64bit" - Some old programs I use refuse to work in such environment.
All in all a solid laptop, with excellent features (and minor inconveniences), but please, HP, this is my third HP laptop and the batteries have never been your forte. (yet I keep buying HP) DO SOMETHING!
UPDATE: The battery won't last for more than an hour and a half, so I took two stars off my review for this major inconvenience. Sorry to say this, but I no longer recommend this purchase.

Toshiba Mini NB305-N440BL 10.1-Inch Netbook (Royal Blue) Review

Toshiba Mini NB305-N440BL 10.1-Inch Netbook (Royal Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's get real here. Netbooks ARE NOT replacements for those of you folks who should be shopping for a NOTEBOOK. Having owned at least 4 Toshiba notebooks in the past and currently on my first Sony notebook, I'd expect those machines to do the heavy lifting... serious Photoshopping, DV editing, CAD modelling, rendering, moderate gaming, etc. It'd be irresponsible to ding netbooks on how inadequate they are at these tasks. With this in mind, the Toshiba NB305-N440 fills a very helpful role for those of you who already have a full-fledged notebook or desktop chugging away in the background.
The Toshiba netbook's 3lb weight and size makes it incredibly portable, handleable, and stowable. Grab it single-handedly at the palmrest, grab it at the hinges, or scoop it up from underneath; it's construction feels sturdy and solid where you don't have to worry about something falling off from this kind of abuse. For you existing notebook users, ever feel like you're devoting 80% of your backpack to carrying around that bohemoth... or how about trying to use a 15" screen on the dining tray in the cattle-section of an economy flight? ESPECIALLY when you're just using it to compose a few paragraphs for a meeting, class, or email rant? The NB305 netbook remedies this exactly. The 10.1" screen can be comfortably angled away from you even when the passenger in front decides to stay reclined throughout the flight. Size and weight. Advantage? Netbook.
Unlike other netbooks, Toshiba's NB305 has a design that accomodates a 6-cell battery as standard. No outrageous goofy protrusion as in HP and Sony's extra-cost offering. With the lid closed, the whole package remains as svelte and stowable as lesser competitors with their 3-cell designs. And BECAUSE the Toshiba NB305 has a 6-cell Li-Ion as standard, real-world usage equates to a 5-7 hour run-time with the brightness set at max while pounding away at tasks that make the hard drive thrash around. Coming from a decade of using 2-hour notebooks, its amazing to be away from an AC outlet for that long.
How about useability for a 1.66ghz machine? With the Microsoft-imposed configuration of 1gig RAM, I had my doubts about Windows 7 Starter edition. It turns out the NB305-N440 boots into the desktop in a reasonable amount of time and simple websurfing, emailing chores are handled without issue. Sites that make use of Flash like Hulu, Youtube, and a myriad of other flash-navigation stuff is very surfable on this netbook. The VGA webcam offers adequate resolution and has a wide enough capture angle to make this netbook suitable for video Skyping. Where it falls short is the speaker volume. This is pandemic of all netbooks. When in the boundaries of your personal space, the dinky speakers are barely audible enough for a conversation in all but the emptiest of coffee shops. Those of you hoping to give one of these to grandma as a dedicated Skype device should hope grandma doesn't mind wearing headphones. No issues with the netbook's mic as the other party will hear you fine. Did this netbook slow down? Eventually. By the time I had Skype fired up, two tabs in IE8 loaded on sizeable pages and a THIRD tab buffering a show on Hulu, the 1gig ram had to swap stuff into the hard drive. Bumping up to 2gigs DDR3 RAM would help, but you'll have to yank out the existing one.
At first unboxing, the Toshiba NB305-N440's brightness is set midway; passable, but not something I'd want to scowl at for more than an hour. Crank up the brightness settings and the Toshiba's efficient LED backlit screen shows itself to be very crisp, very readable, quite bright. The next several hours was spent installing personal stuff, Win7 updates (224megs), and removing the thankfully small amount of Toshiba bloatware. All that time the bright screen was legible and comfy on the eyes. Even after Windows Update did everything it wanted, the netbook still booted up in the same 40-ish second span. That's kinda impressive considering they're still using a non-SSD traditional hard drive. Part of this can be attributed to the reduced amount of OS baggage in Windows 7 Starter edition. On that note, there was hardly anything I missed in this OS-lite. Can't change the wallpaper? No big deal. The only plausible nit here is that Win7 Starter lacks multiple user accounts... so those hoping to lock things down and hand it to their tots might have to upgrade beyond "Starter Edition".
The heat vent on the left side emitted therms about the equivalent of holding your hand up near a fluorescent desklamp. It's there, but in no way bothersome.
While Senor Jobs positions his iPad to be a "consumption" device, there are those of us who wish to stay productive and the reason for a netbook's existence is to sport that keyboard. The Toshiba NB305 netbooks don't disappoint here. Touch-typists will appreciate chicklet keys that feel as nicely spaced as all the other keyboards they've worked on. Toshiba saved space by narrowing the traditionally long caps-lock, shift, and enter keys. The touchpad is nice too... full-size just like most big-boy notebooks. Possibly the biggest of ANY netbook. Dedicated left and right buttons are in the appropriate expected spot.
The last and most prominent nit is that the NB305 lacks built-in Bluetooth. Bluetooth would allow the Toshiba netbook to simultaneously control a mouse, feed a wireless headset, and transfer files between your smartphone. Being internal, it wouldn't eat up a USB slot. Alas, neither the preconfigured units or ToshibaDirect offers internal Bluetooth in their netbooks. (Oddly, the Bluetooth SOFTWARE stack is already installed) The only recourse is their low-profile USB Bluetooth 2.1 dongle. Speaking of USB, one of the three slots on this netbook offers power even when the machine is off. This means only having to carry a USB charge cable for your phone instead of a larger dedicated wallwart when travelling lite.
This leaves the last de rigueur issue, High Definition. It's seems the rage to pair up HD with netbooks nowadays. I'm one of the biggest HD snobs out there, but after using a netbook for several hours, forcing HD into a netbook form factor is just pointless... moreso when it only serves to kill the battery life with its high CPU/GPU requirement and the high-capacity battery requirement itself. Being able to stay productive for a 6-hour stretch on a Toshiba netbook trumps the notion of hunching over a 10" screen squinting at a "high definition" file for two hours. If I'm missing a show, I'm willing to "settle" for a 480P stream from Hulu on a Toshiba NB305-N440 rather than give up two thirds the amount of battery life in some of these HD netbooks. Need a portable high-definition playback machine? Get a full-fledged notebook; full-HD widescreen, larger/louder speakers, blu-ray drive. I suggest this from first-hand experience.
Need to be productive while staying highly mobile? This Toshiba NB305-N440 is appropriate for THAT task. I can't really ding it for lack of internal Bluetooth now that Toshiba offers their low-profile dongle. Yes it takes up a precious USB port, but it'll make up for it by its versatility in handling a (Bluetooth) mouse, headset, smartphone, pen tablet, etc. The streamlined 6-cell battery and other forward-thinking features like LED backlight, USB charging, diminuitive AC adapter, and draft-N WiFi makes this a well-focused netbook. In its pricepoint, the NB305-N440 netbook offers a great degree of functionality out-of-the-box, exudes a good amount of sturdiness, comes with a 3 year warranty, and is born from a company that's been into mobile computing for nearly two decades now.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life) Review

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU27-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the exact same netbook as the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life). The only difference is the cover, which is a matte black slightly rubbery material. There is a slight price premium, but I believe it is worth it as it attracts no finger prints and it appears it would scratch less. The inside, however is still the same glossy plastic as the other models.
Impressions So Far:
Very good tiny computer. Easy to use. Using the specs below, the following run fine: HULU 360p videos (slight stutter depending on computer load and connection speed), Open Office, 700~MB (avi) files, etc. High Def movie files 720p or greater stutter and can't be played. 480p Hulu videos will play, but it will be choppy. Computer stays cool. Contrast appears washed out if not viewed from a limited angle range. Keyboard and track pad are both very easy to use. 8.5 hours of battery under full load. It is an excellent netbook, but I gave it four stars because I feel the viewing angles could've been better and I wish the overclock setting on super performance mode was a little higher. You can overclock even more using third party software, and it will improve video playback, but it's a hassle. Don't expect the same processing power as a larger laptop or desktop and you will definitely not be disappointed.Useful Information:
There are pages of reviews covering most of the technical aspects of this machine, so I will focus on what was the most difficult information for me to find on my own once I decided to purchase. I realize that many of you may not be technically savvy, so I will try to be detailed as possible.
What to Purchase
ASUS 1005PE-PU27 (Obviously)
Kingston ValueRAM 2 GB 800MHz DDR2 CL5 SODIMM Notebook Memory KVR800D2S5/2G (Optional)
SanDisk Extreme III 4 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card SDSDRX3-4096-A21 (Optional)
*Edit* A few people commented they had trouble using the previously recommended Transcend 4 GB Class 6 SDHC card for ReadyBoost.
Although I had no problems using this product for Ready Boost, I have changed the recommended card to the above. YMMV. Thank you.
What to Do Once You Receive
1) Insert battery. Charge for 8 hours. Most people say Li-Ion batteries do not require conditioning. This is probably true, but the manual explicitly states to do this. Conditioning means that you will charge the battery to capacity and run it empty a few times. At best this will give the maximum amount of battery charge over the life of the battery. At worst, you won't be able to play with your new netbook for 8 hours.
Running the battery to 0% once in a while will also help maintain the accuracy of the battery meter. Remember this computer will auto shut off once at about 10%. Turn it back on and use until 0%.
2) Once fully charged, turn the computer on and follow the instructions. It is very straight forward. Select language, time, etc. This will take a few minutes as it finishes installing everything. Be patient.
3) Once you get to your desktop you can proceed to remove bloatware. What is bloatware? The extra programs delivered with the computer that at best take up space, and at worst, slows down your computer. Go to the "start menu" (little windows icon on lower left) and select "control panel". Under "programs" click the link that says "uninstall a program". This will bring up a list of all the programs you have installed on your computer.
This is all optional and may be harmful to your computer if done incorrectly. Please proceed with caution. Highlight the program you would like to remove and click on the "uninstall/remove" button on the top bar. Click yes to any menu. Each uninstall will take a few minutes. I removed the Trend Micro Antivirus, anything that says Microsoft Office (like 6 items), and the Chicken game and game client. These are all trialware and not very good. I will tell you what to use instead later.
*Next Steps require internet connection*
4) Go to your Asus docking menu. It's the menu on the top of the screen. Go to "Eee Tools" (last one) and click. Choose Live Update. Update whatever files it tells you to (it was just Vibe for me).5) Update your Bios. You would think it would be part of Asus Live Update but it's not. Go to your "start menu". Click on "All Programs". Click on the "Asus" folder. Choose the "AsusUpdate for Eee PC" folder and click on the "ASUSUpdate" icon. A gold and silver menu will appear. Choose update through internet and follow the directions. Choose the latest Bios version and update. Simple.
6) If you are upgrading your RAM do so at this point. There are a lot of people complaining about RAM upgrading issues. Follow these instructions and you will be ok. Purchase the RAM mentioned above. It works and Amazon sells it. Why do the Crucial ones have so many problems? It could be they are CL6 and you need a CL5. It could be the older BIOS. It could be a lot of other things. Just buy the Kingston 2GB 800MHZ DDR2 CL5. Why risk the headache? It ships free from Amazon and it's about the same price.
Restart your computer. As soon as it turns on, click on F2 a couple times. You will get into the "BIOS SETUP UTILITY". Use your arrow keys to go right until you reach the "Boot" menu. Press down until you reach "Boot Booster". Press enter. Choose "Disabled" and enter. Click right to "Exit" menu. Choose "Exit & Save Changes".
Turn off your computer.
Turn it over. Use a phillips head screw driver to unscrew the small rectangular cover on the bottom. Remove the cover. You will see the RAM module with two metal clips on each side. Make sure you have no static charge on your hands. Use your thumbs to gently push the clips outwards to the side. Use your other finger to gently lift the top of the module up towards you. It should pop up so the module is now at a 45 degree angle. Pull the module out carefully. Take the new 2GB module and insert it in the same angle making sure its fully in. Don't push too hard. Just make sure its in. Then gently push the module down flat. The clips will fall into place automatically. Replace cover and screw.
Turn on the computer and get into the "BIOS SETUP UTILITY" again pressing the F2 key. "Enable" Boot Booster using the same steps as above. Start the computer as usual. You are done. RAM recognized. No shutdown errors corded or battery. Yay.
7) ReadyBoost (Optional) - ReadyBoost is a nifty little feature on Windows Vista and 7 that let's you use a solid state device like flash drives or sd cards to cache data instead of using your hard drive. Basically it may make your computer faster. 4GB is the most you can allocate, so anymore than this and you will use the rest of the space as extra storage. The ASUS comes with a little slot for SDHC cards so that is what I used.
Insert the SDHC card. Click on the "Computer" icon on your desktop. Right click on the storage drive. Should be "Removable Disk E:". Choose "format". "FAT 32" "Quick Format" "Start".
Right click again on the "Removable Disk E:" and choose "Properties" (last one). You should see a series of tabs on the top. Choose "ReadyBoost" "Dedicate the device to ReadyBoost". "OK" Done.
If you ever want to not use the SD card for ReadyBoost, then go to the "ReadyBoost" tab and click on the "Do not use this device" option.
8. How to change your wallpaper. Windows 7 Starter doesn't let you. But it doesn't mean you can't. Go to your ASUS Docking Menu again. The one on top. Choose "Eee Tools" and then select "System Setting". It will bring you to a wallpaper options page. You can select one image or a slide show.
You don't have a "System Setting" option? Don't panic. Apparently some computers do not come with this function installed. Do not install third party wallpaper managers. I don't think I can post links, but here [...]. Run this and it will put the System Setting option in your dock. If the link didn't post, you can find it on the ASUS website. It's called SystemSetting_Setup-1_1_0_8.zip under Utilities. Enjoy!

9. What programs should you replace the Microsoft Office and Trend Micro Anti Virus with? I chose Open Office. It's free and it does everything MS Office does. Google it. For antivirus, Microsoft offers a free one that is actually very good. It's called Microsoft Security Essentials. You can search for it too.
Another free program I like to use is Picassa. It's a photo viewing and editing tool made by Google.
If you like to watch movies and such the following is really important. Search for and install K-Lite Codec Pack. It basically puts in all the various video codecs so you can play most video and audio files.
Finally, I installed Fire Fox as my default browser. I feel IE is very slow.
10. You can now run windows update and update everything you need to. If you still see MS Office updates, that means you didn't delete all the Office programs.
11. Finally, ASUS comes with the hard drive in two partitions. This means instead of having one 250GB hard drive you have one C: boot drive (100GB) and one partitioned D: drive (120~GB). If you're fine with this then ok. Leave it alone. If you want to make...Read more›

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5134 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5134 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We tested a variety of Toshiba Satellites - and it's very confusing, because there are so many model numbers that are so similar.
We highly recommend the Toshiba Satellite, just not this model (C655-S5134). The problem is, it's using one of the SLOWEST processors on the market today. It's roughly 10-year-old technology.
To make matters even more confusing, after testing a dozen different Toshibas, we actually bought another Satellite C655 model (the C655-S5048) for the same price. It's almost identical in every respect, except the processor on our model (AMD P320) has a clock speed of 1,261. The clock speed on the C655-S5143 has a clock speed of (get this)... 350! That's nearly 1/4th the speed!
This was all very confusing to us, but here's the "short cut" - when you're shopping around for laptops, write down the name of the processor, and look it up at: CPUbenchmark-net
You will see some ridiculous inconsistencies, and you will be an informed consumer. Just poke around on Amazon for a few minutes - you will find plenty of Toshiba laptops for under $400, with processor speeds over 800-1,000 (which should be considered the bare minimum).
Don't think for a second that a faster processor will cost more. We also reviewed some of the more expensive Satellites ($599-$699) and found slow processors in that price class as well! And this is consistent with pretty much all computer manufacturers - the problem is that Intel, AMD, etc., invest a lot of money in marketing, and consumers demand chips they don't know anything about. But you can be a more informed consumer, and feel really good about your purchase.
Here are some general comments about the C655-series Toshiba Satellites:
PRO:
-Keyboard is an excellent size, and numeric keypad on the side is excellent for us. We use it all the time.
-Screen is fantastic - love it, no complaints. (I would not recommend the Toshiba models with the Trubrite screen - models with the TruBrite cost a minimum of $100 more & it picks up lots of glare/reflections.)
-Stays very cool (even when playing videos), and the fan rarely kicks on.
-It's light weight & durable. My 12-month old will pound on the keys occasionally, and it holds up just fine.
-Comes with built-in antivirus software. I recommend also installing Avira, and every computer/laptop you own should be running Hostsman.
-The battery isn't shabby, although this model has a slightly cheaper battery than the one I bought. The battery on the C655-S5048 lasts at least an hour longer.CON:
-No built-in camera or mic.
-Sound is not great. Most people assume it's cheap speakers, but it's not. Speakers are fine - but the sound driver itself is the problem for some reason. You can uninstall the driver & have Windows install a generic driver that will boost your sound levels by 50% (easier said than done in Windows 7).
-We have some general complaints against Windows 7, not Toshiba's fault (a discussion for another day). The biggest problem is, with the 64-bit version of Windows 7, we could not port any of our software from our previous Satellite to our new one.
Bottom Line: (1) Don't buy this model - it's a very nice laptop, but the speed is too slow. (2) You don't have to be a techie to be an informed consumer. It only takes 5 seconds to look up the speed on the site provided above (again, 800-1,000 should be considered the absolute minimum). (3) Unless you need a super-computer for specialized programming, you should be able to find a Toshiba Satellite with a great processor & all the amenities you need for under $400, right here on Amazon.
Please don't get frustrated in your search - I give this laptop 5-stars except for the speed. This is a good brand (Satellite) and a good price (under $400). But there are at least 5 other models that are 3-4x faster for the same price. If you're looking at this product, reading this review, you are definitely on the right track. Hope this helps, and enjoy your new laptop!
