eMachines EL1331-03 Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

Pros: Boots right up! Cost of $279.95 (at brick and mortar electronics store, so even with tax, take it home for just under $300.00), small size for a desktop, quietness and presumably power-efficient, plenty of USB ports, button to operate DVD tray is on the left (on the user's right side towards the front) so you don't accidentally bump it, or have a toddler open it. I have been transferring files and loading programs on it for home use over the past three nights, and am experiencing no objectionable idiosyncrasies, except...
Cons: Keyboard is cheap. Mouse is of the "ball" type. Also cheap. I am using the much nicer ones left over from the ancient PC I am replacing. Speakers are not included. "Fit and finish" of the front of the case reflects price.
Minor bumps in the road: I won't tell you how long it took me to figure out how to open and close the DVD tray. No instructions in box or sticker on case. Also, SD cards were not read at first; worked around this with USB adapter, and then corrected by downloading chipset driver that tech support linked me to via messaging and e-mail. Which leads us to...

This PC is a great value for the price it's selling at these days.
It's fairly high powered within its price-range, and unlike a lot of low-end laptops, this one has a great feeling keyboard. Even better yet is the fact that the keyboard comes with a (numeric) keypad. You usually don't see that on laptops this size and for some of the applications I use (particularly remote hosting to server systems and financial programs), it's great. One draw-back however is that it means that the main keyboard (non-numeric) is a bit smaller than normal and I do notice this although I think you can easily get used to this.
It also has a dedicated $ (and euro) key, although I'm so used to shift-4 I don't see myself as using it for anything other than one-hand typing.
I'm not crazy about the placement of certain keys (PgUp, PgDn, Home, End, arrows).
One thing I found VERY VERY annoying is that there are no USB-ports on the right-hand side of the unit. This means that your wired mouse has to be plugged into the left-hand side and most of the length of the wire is wasted running to the other side which gives you less options. (This is all assuming you use your mouse with your right hand.)

Acer eMachines EM250-1915 1.66GHz Intel Atom Processor N270 Netbook Review

Acer eMachines EM250-1915 1.66GHz Intel Atom Processor N270 Netbook

I have several computers. I got tired of lugging my 15 inch laptop all over the city. I looked at several net-books with a budget of about 300 dollars in mind.
After looking at about 6 or 7 net-books, most of them with Windows 7 and an
Atom N470 processor, I found this little gem. When I played with the Window 7
machines I noticed that the graphical response was sluggish. I assumed that the Atom processor working with 1 gig of memory and the embedded video processor were working hard under Windows 7. The eMachine net-book with Windows XP Home SP/3 seemed a lot more responsive and peppy and since the price was about 30 to 50 dollars cheaper than the other machines I bought the eMachine with XP. I have not been disappointed! I love this machine. It weights less than half my 15 inch laptop I bought in 2009. After cleaning off all the crapware and setting it up to work like my other laptop it spins like a top. I then connected up my external USB DVD burner to it and had no problem making backup driver and system restore disks.
I have this net-book in my backpack all the time. Time will tell if this thing
is built well enough to last 3-5 years. The thing is actually a re-branded Acer.
You should be able get a 6 cell battery for it to extend the discharge time to 6 hours or so. The eMachine website has the drivers for it and some documentation, but there is only basic online support for this model.
I highly recommend this model for it's speed and price. So far I have been running all kinds of popular apps and it hasn't crashed or locked up (yet).
My only gripe is that I wish there was a physical volume control(wheel)
to control headphone/line-out volume.

EMACHINE 15.6IN 2GB/160 NOTEBOOK Review

EMACHINE 15.6IN 2GB/160 NOTEBOOK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nice inexpensive laptop. I've only had it for a few days, so my comments are on functionality, not on quality or durability.
First, annoyances.
It has a webcam, but doesn't have a built-in microphone. I guess, it's a way to shave a few pennies off the cost, but quite annoying.
It has a DVD drive, but without Lightscribe. Obviously, less common feature than microphone - but I tried to label my system backup disks, and couldn't do it.
It has a multi-card reader. I had no problems with SD card and Memory Stick, but when I tried to put a Memory Stick Pro duo (which is shorter that regular MS) - it got stuck inside. To short to "click". Couldn't get it out without tweezers.
And, of course, there are no Windows disks. So, if I decide to re-partition the drive - I don't know if I can still install Windows.
Last among little annoyances - only two USB ports. Given that one is always taken by a mouse (I hate touchpads) - only one is left. Oh well - there is always a USB router.
Keyboard layout takes a little getting used to - there is a numeric pad and Ins, Del keys are duplicated - but no Home, End, PgUp or PgDn. Again, hard to find a word other than weird.
Once you get used to all these idiosyncrasies, it's actually a very nice machine. I like the keyboard responsiveness, webcam video is great quality, I haven't seen a 15.6" screen under $400, and it's not heavy.
OS came with a bunch of trial versions (Norton, Office, games); so if you are like me, you spend the first evening uninstalling all the junk. But, I guess, that's how manufacturers keep Windows price low (if not $0) - so I don't mind.
My wife said that it "looks cheap"; but (a) I have no idea what it means in relation to a laptop, and (b) it *is* cheap.

I bought this sight unseen at Wal-Mart yesterday. They had apparently received them for a day after Christmas sale but never put them on display. I saw a bunch of them sitting in the "laptop cage" with a price tag of $228 on it. I went ahead and bought it, figuring that if I didn't like it I could take it back.
Well, I love it and I am so glad that I did get it. It's a great little netbook and I am already getting used to the keyboard. My only complaint is with the trackpad - I wish it was slightly larger. It seems to me like it could be a little wider and not affect the overall size of the case.
The screen is bright, keyboard good, I've been happy with the performance of it so far...overall I would rate this as one of my best purchases of 2009. I might even go back and try to get one for my wife. Even though I paid less than what this is selling for on Amazon, I would not hesitate to pay up to $300 for this netbook.

I bought this about two weeks ago when it was on sale for under three hundred bucks. I have been using a Macbook Pro for the last 4 years, which is great but which is also my wife's computer. With the kids and I also trying to use her computer I figured it was time to pony up for a second laptop.
Pluses:
1. Price
2. functions just fine for internet, watching DVDs, You Tube, Itunes, etc. no noticable difference in quality of images or streaming from my high end Mac.
3. Costs less than a netbook, has a dvd player/recorder.
4. Battery life is actually very good - 4+ hours so far for regular surfing. video knows it down to about 3 hours.
Fairly solid feel to it for being a hunk of plastic
Back has all sorts of access panels for people that want to change out the hard drive or add more RAMMy Age of Mythology game works just fine on it.
Minuses:
#1 gripe - no HDMI port. Bummer. HAs some cheesy aavi port but I haven't bothered to figure out if I can convert that to HDMI. Whoops on their part, but then agin, this thing cost me less than most netbooks.
Speakers are lousy. If you mess with the EQ and SRS Wow you can get it to an aceptable level, but out of the box they sound like they are tin cans. Fine with headphones.
Keyboard is okay - does not have a high quality feel to it. easier to type mistakes than on my Mac.
Windows 7 is...... nothing more than XP with a couple of the bugs fixed and an interface that makes it harder to find things if you are used to XP or 2000.
Boot of programs is a bit slow. I think this could be a WIndows issue more than a hardware issue. Ovberall - works just fine for a cheap laptop. don't need to pay twice as much if all you do is surf the net and watch TV on it.
