(More customer reviews)I've been using this laptop for about a week and overall I am very happy with this purchase. The machine is fast, the screen is looks amazing (glossy, FYI), very bright and no dead pixels. Another plus is that there was not excessive bloatware on this unit, and I only had to remove a handful of trial software, un-needed apps and desktop shortcuts to clean it up. The speakers sound good, and HDMI out is a nice option (though we're unlikely to use it). I like, too, that the outside of the case is matte, so it does not attract fingerprints.
I removed one star for two key reasons:
- The keyboard is "soft"; we're clicky-keyboard family. It's layout is fine, comfortable, etc, but it will take some time to adjust to the softness of this keyboard.
- I was unable to connect to my 5GHz wireless N network, but a few comments about this:
I have a dual-band router (Linksys WRT600N), sending both G and N speeds separately. This Acer was unable to connect to the N, but the G connection was fine. Note that my work laptop connects to the N network without issue. I think it may have to do with a newer wireless chipset in this unit because, although it only connects to G, it's reporting speeds of 130mbs (over the 54mbs 802.11G standard). Regardless, we're happy with the wireless performance and speed so far, but disappointing and frustrating it didn't "just work".
I tried contacting Acer support and though I only had the unit less that week, they stated that they did not have resources to assist me with this problem and directed me to fee-based support. Frankly, I find that a bit appalling. I happen to be fairly technical, but if you need basic support from a company, it's best to look elsewhere. This was the main reason for the star coming off.
In summary, if you need an affordable, full-featured laptop, this is a great option, but only if you're comfortable digging out of your own support holes -- Acer is not your friend post-sale. Extra props to Amazon (as always) for crediting me when the price dropped prior to my receiving the computer.

(More customer reviews)This thing has it all. It's all the power and slender of a macbook pro for half the price. Well, maybe not "all" the power, but all that most people need.
I will say right off the bat that this laptop has a great video card, but a low quality sound card. So if you do audio/video editing and not a lot of gaming, I would go with something else. If your a gamer though, this has unbeatable graphics for the -$600 price range.
Starcraft 2 runs at 70+ fps on low, 30-50 on medium and High, and 15-20 on ultra. WoW would surely run perfectly with 4 gigs of RAM.
I love this laptop. The keyboard is comfy, the touchpad feels good and has a very intuitive scroller on it for reading pages. The screen is amazing, HD, very bright, looks awesome.
The pros outweigh the cons very much, but I feel like I have to mention them for people. There are a couple of dead pixels, like 4-5 and that is common from other reviews I have read. They are really not noticeable during use, and very small, but still frustrating. Also, a lot of bloatware comes installed and NO windows 7 disc :(. Really frustrating but for $550 I think it is still well worth it. This thing is packed with great technology and is slim to boot. If your a gamer strapped for cash, I would HIGHLY recommend this over comparable toshiba's, hp's and dell's if you are torn.

(More customer reviews)Nice inexpensive laptop. I've only had it for a few days, so my comments are on functionality, not on quality or durability.
First, annoyances.
It has a webcam, but doesn't have a built-in microphone. I guess, it's a way to shave a few pennies off the cost, but quite annoying.
It has a DVD drive, but without Lightscribe. Obviously, less common feature than microphone - but I tried to label my system backup disks, and couldn't do it.
It has a multi-card reader. I had no problems with SD card and Memory Stick, but when I tried to put a Memory Stick Pro duo (which is shorter that regular MS) - it got stuck inside. To short to "click". Couldn't get it out without tweezers.
And, of course, there are no Windows disks. So, if I decide to re-partition the drive - I don't know if I can still install Windows.
Last among little annoyances - only two USB ports. Given that one is always taken by a mouse (I hate touchpads) - only one is left. Oh well - there is always a USB router.
Keyboard layout takes a little getting used to - there is a numeric pad and Ins, Del keys are duplicated - but no Home, End, PgUp or PgDn. Again, hard to find a word other than weird.
Once you get used to all these idiosyncrasies, it's actually a very nice machine. I like the keyboard responsiveness, webcam video is great quality, I haven't seen a 15.6" screen under $400, and it's not heavy.
OS came with a bunch of trial versions (Norton, Office, games); so if you are like me, you spend the first evening uninstalling all the junk. But, I guess, that's how manufacturers keep Windows price low (if not $0) - so I don't mind.
My wife said that it "looks cheap"; but (a) I have no idea what it means in relation to a laptop, and (b) it *is* cheap.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this laptop on 5/25, after reading good reviews on Newegg and CNet. I received it on 5/26 (One Day Shipping through Amazon Prime). My initial impressions were that, although the exterior leaves something to be desired (it's very plain and functional-looking), the computer seems very sturdy and well-built. The keyboard is full sized and easy to type on. The touchpad is a nice size, although to left/right click, you have to apply a good amount of pressure, which takes some getting used to. The screen quality is good, although it's very shiny, so you have to have it at the right angle or else it's reflects way too much light.
I had a problem at first with the computer freezing on startup, which was a little frustrating. However, once I uninstalled McAfee and other bloatware, the problem was resolved. I recommend getting rid of these programs before attempting to download other programs. Without them, it runs like a dream.
It's a little on the heavy side, due to its large size. However, compared to other laptops this size, it's a reasonable weight. It'd only be a problem if you had to haul it around all day, but it would be comfortable to carry to or from class or work. The large screen would be perfect for watching movies or streamed video, although the speakers sound a little bit tinny.
Overall, I am very pleased with this laptop. I use it mainly for watching movies, surfing the internet, and writing papers, but I think it'd be able to handle more intense activities, like gaming. Spec-wise, it's comparable to machines that cost twice as much. The built-in webcam and HD components are a nice touch. I think it'd be perfect for the first-time college student or home user, even if it doesn't look as slick as other computers.
I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the freezing issue. That's more of a problem with Windows than a problem with the laptop itself, though.

(More customer reviews)The Acer 1410 with Intel dual-core SU2300 and Windows 7 is a useful, general purpose mini-notebook. It is small and light enough to be carried around all the time, yet large and fast enough to do most ordinary work. Word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail and Web browsing are all responsive, although there have been reports of some performance limits showing HD video. These units are being delivered with 64-bit Windows and 2GB of memory. For about US$80 one can install 2x2GB of PC2-6400 memory, reselling the delivered 2x1GB of PC2-5300 memory if that proves possible. Speed becomes faster and battery life longer when using the Windows Classic theme and setting "Adjust for best performance" in Control Panel, System, Advanced system settings, under Advanced and Performance. Even with maximum power use the unit remains cool, with only slight warming near left-side ventilation exhausts.
The display provides about 135 color pixels per inch, while the human eye is capable of resolving only about 70-90 per inch. Small-size text will be unreadable without a magnifier. However, all commonly used Windows displays are readable, unaided, for a person with normal to somewhat near-sighted vision. Display software provides an option to boost text dimensions 25 percent at the expense of reducing content of application windows. A 50 percent brightness setting is adequate for indoor use and extends battery life. Even 100 percent brightness cannot overcome reflections from the glossy screen for outdoor use. Visibility angles are limited to around 30 degrees in practice, slightly more from above, and color fade begins at about 15 degrees.
The keyboard design provides full US spacing of 9 inches across a row of 12 keys. Tactile feedback is adequate for fast touch-typing. The touchpad is adequate, but its many options may confuse new users. It is best to start by visiting Control Panel, Mouse, Device Settings, Settings, and disabling all options except Buttons, setting the PalmCheck and Touch Sensitivity options to the second lightest. Later the span of options can be adjusted as familiarity with the unit grows. The touchpad software is unresponsive. Even with options disabled, the pointer movement on the display is apt to surge and freeze. Acer's case design worsens those problems by providing poor tactile feedback for touchpad boundaries.
The WiFi interface performs creditably and connects quickly. WiFi can be disabled by a switch under the front edge to save power when it is not needed. There is also a Bluetooth switch, but the 1410 does not come with Bluetooth. The audio is adequate for typical office use, where most Windows sounds are usually disabled. Battery life in normal use is likely to be around 5 hours. The power adapter delivered provides only 30 watts, maybe because of safety issues and recalls Acer has experienced. Battery recharge time with the computer off is around 2-1/2 hours and twice that with the computer on. Windows 7 performs without the reliability problems and the annoyances of Windows Vista. There are minor functional improvements over Windows XP, nothing that adds much productivity for office use. Utilities like Notepad and Calculator have not changed function since Windows 95.
The 1410's rich cousin, the 1810, is expected to be available in quantity by mid-November, 2009. Its SU7300 processor will be about 20 percent faster, and it will be delivered with 4GB memory and a bigger disk. For most office uses there will be no added benefit to justify a 50 percent higher price. Some customers may be attracted by around a 25 percent increase in battery capacity. Overall the Acer 1410 is a good candidate for performing typical office work in a mobile setting, but no portable computer delivers the productivity of a fast desktop computer with a large display, mouse and freestanding keyboard.
Some reservations: Acer's documentation is unsatisfactory, only available on delivered machines, not on the Web. It consists of a "quick guide" to a category of machines, in this case both 1410 and 1810 models, equivalent to five typewritten pages, and a "generic guide" to the Aspire family, mainly on proprietary software, written in a CYA style and in a British dialect of English. As an example of the low-grade advice, it recommends carrying a spare battery but nowhere specifies appropriate batteries, or for that matter, specifies any other replacement parts or product options. In the case of the 1410, this can be disastrous, because the same 1410 model number was used by Acer for an earlier portable computer, which requires different batteries. The battery is Acer part number UM09E31, but as of October, 2009, there was no source for that battery. Acer's warranty requires a lawyer to decipher, saying to contact a "Call Center" but providing no telephone number.

(More customer reviews)I've been using my 3810tz since July '09. It really is a nice laptop. Great size, decent performance.
However, the laptop has been recalled because of an overheating risk due to a manufacturer's defect.
With Acer, I get the privilege of paying for my own packing materials to ship something I depend on for work and school for 7-10 days. When I called Acer Support to handle the repair, I asked if there was someone to complain to about how the recall was handled (a voucher for packing material and something else to show that they understand that their mistake is costing me at least a week of work).
Some companies with bad service will at least listen to your complaints before ignoring them.
Acer won't even listen.

(More customer reviews)I'm a somewhat advanced computer user and had been looking at laptops for a while before buying the Acer AS5742Z-4685. I dug into all of the specs of about 6 different models and zeroed in on this one as the best value. The price point was above the $300 I spent on our 'family' laptop a year ago, but I'm glad I spent the extra $100 (check out some of the private sellers' prices).
Pros: Crystal-clear LED screen, fast computing, great multi-tasking, not too much crap-ware pre-installed, lightweight, and easy-to-use keyboard
Cons: Battery life is good, but not great; price point is a bit high if you're willing to wait for Black Friday or Gold Box deals... which I obviously wasn't)
Overall, this laptop is a good buy in the $500 range, a great value at the $400 level, and--if it ever goes on sale in the $300 to 350 range--don't miss your chance to buy it!

(More customer reviews)Yes, agreeing with one of the other reviews, I agree that the speakers are monotone, but buying a laptop for sound quality is ill-advised. I usually use headphones while watching movies or listening to music anyways. This laptop is not for gaming purposes, so if that's your intent...look elsewhere. If you're looking for a value laptop, you cannot pass this up! A $500 laptop with an Intel I3 processor is too good to be true! This is my 3rd laptop and I now rarely ever use any of the others. Compare the processing power of the I3 processor against all of the other processors in this price range at [...] and then make your choice. Intel's new line of processors is without comparison. My desktop has an Intel I7 and is unsurpassed by most anything on the market. If you're looking for a laptop that will handle most people's standard operations...look no further. As far as the McAfee problem in the reviews...anti-virus software requires special removal tools that have to be downloaded from the designer's website, so you cannot simply uninstall with Windows stock software. The keys are flat, so if you have typing issues...this could be a problem for you. Beware that Toshiba laptops (which I also own) utilize very similar flat keyed keyboards. My other laptop which is a Compaq has a dual core processor (also upgraded to 4 GB of Ram) and does not compare to the speed of this laptop, so if you want a fast laptop for watching movies, surfing the web, or doing mass amounts of spreadsheet and business modeling (which is what I do)...then this is an outstanding purchase!
