PalmOne Infrared Wireless Keyboard for Palm PDAs Review

PalmOne Infrared Wireless Keyboard for Palm PDAs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update/Caution: As of early October 2004, PalmOne has a "Universal Wireless Keyboard driver" update on their T3 web page. That is NOT the correct driver for this keyboard - the driver for this keyboard is available from the Palm Accessories page for this keyboard and appears to have last been updated in 12/2003. I experienced system problems after installing that incorrect driver, so be sure you're getting the right one (the pictures show the UWKeyboard with a different key layout).
I've had one of these for a few days now, and it seems to work very nicely. The lack of dedicated number keys is indeed a minor annoyance as is the position of the lower hinge (at the spacebar) but everything else has worked quite well with my Tungsten T3.
There are several things to be aware of when you get one of these:
* The driver software in the package is almost certainly out of date, so you should download the newer version from the Palm website. Be sure you get the drivers for the correct keyboard since there are two different wireless ones.
* On a T3 you'll need to set landscape mode to left-handed orientation because of the position of the IR transmitter.
* While it seems tight, the IR wand is long enough to work with an extended T3 in landscape mode - you'll have it at what seems an odd angle, but it works. If you use the flipover cover that comes with the T3, you'll need to have the T3 sitting a bit further out and further to the right (the base of the T3 won't be down in the holder area), but it still seems stable - you don't have to remove the cover in order to use the keyboard.
* On-screen buttons that don't match the preprogrammed names reachable with the blue Fn key can be selected using Ctrl-Cmd-Letter where Letter is the first letter of the button (or any unique letter in its name).
* The default in the Keyboard driver is to only look for a keyboard signal for a short time after the Palm is powered on - generally 10-30 seconds depending on how you set it. After that it will stop looking in order to save power. That means if you turn on your Palm and use it a bit before dropping it onto the keyboard then it probably won't still be looking. If it finds a keyboard, it'll stay on just fine. Most people can probably set this down to the lowest setting and never notice it.
* The up-arrow key is also the "?" key, so if you need to go up while selecting you have to use the blue Fn key (since Shift-Up will just get you a "?"). This'll be clearer when you look at the keyboard. Otherwise selecting text works as you'd expect (Ctrl-Shift-arrow to select words, etc.)
* There's a quick reference/help area in the Keyboard driver that you install on your Palm. It has some useful tips and is always with you (unlike the PDF manual).
* The keyboard does use power on the Palm since the IR port has to be on, so your battery life will be lower while you're using it - lower still if you're using both the IR keyboard and a BlueTooth cellphone as a modem. It's still good for a day or two depending on how much you use it (and the shorter battery life is something T3 owners should already be aware of).
* The Tab key can be configured to either switch fields or insert a TAB character by default, with the other behavior available by using Fn-Tab.
UPDATE: After using it for a while, all of the above still stands but I have two additional notes:
* When the Palm is looking for a keyboard, it's looking for a keypress - that's what sends a character and makes the Palm realize there's a keyboard present and just being in the keyboard cradle isn't enough. If you miss that window of time you can force it to look again by either powering off and back on or by switching to the Keyboard application and telling it to look again.
* I use a shopping list program and I've found that in some grocery stores the lighting used in refrigerated/frozen foods sections can make the Palm keyboard driver think that a keyboard is present and sending characters (frozen 'p's?). If you run into this, your best alternative is to cover the IR port with your finger.

Micro Innovations PDA Portable Folding Wireless Keyboard - TKB700U Review

Micro Innovations PDA Portable Folding Wireless Keyboard - TKB700U
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok here is the deal just as the other comment describes this keyboard is just about useless. It appears that you need a massivly out of date PDA for this keyboard to work. Even calling Micro Innovations themselves was a headache. It took a very nice guy 20min to search through their old database just to find the driver for this keyboard (oh and by the way the CD that comes with the Keyboard is blank because its so out of date). Not only that the company gives you a disclaimer that its out of date and you MUST waive any rights to and repercussions that may occur if you attempt to use this keyboard with your PDA (it sounded to me that it wasn't all that great even when it did work).
In any event I also did the stupid thing and it is not worth returning it. Even thought I had a very old Dell PDA with with the 2002 operation system the infa-red is not found. So I too now have a very cool useless folding keyboard. Maybe I will get lucky and it will work with a standard infa-red computer so I can at least get some fun use out of it for kicks.

Targus PA870U Universal Wireless Keyboard Review

...and make some REAL use of your Visor.
As a software developer and author, I find myself writing notes and articles in many places outside my home or office. I have tried carrying my laptop occasionally, but the thing is really not a comfortable platform to lug into a lecture or squeeze into a small car. This accessory for the Visor has changed my manner of writing entirely. I can carry my Visor and keyboard in one pocket (khakis...and it DOES look funny), if necessary. Try THAT with a notebook. The keyboard is much sturdier than it appears, as its case and structure are metal, and it has a nice heft to it, not like a featherweight piece of junk. The keys themselves are large enough for real touch-typing, and don't constrain you to the minimal limits that the clamshell keyboards or built-ins do.
The connector for the Visor itself IS a bit questionable. I'm not horribly afraid that it will break, but compared to the version for the Palm, this connector is ridiculously difficult to use. Additionally, when the keyboard is setup, the two outer hinges are locked open, but the center one still moves, making the use of the keyboard on your lap a bit problematic (unless you keep your knees together). You will find yourself wanting a better word processor than the Memo Pad. Invest in a real program like Pedit, and you'll be able to write larger documents in a more feature-rich environment.
The best thing about the keyboard? People think that this keyboard is the neatest thing they've ever seen; you'll get quite a crowd gathering when you unfold it. Overall, an excellent product well-worthy of praise. It takes the Visor to a new level of usefulness.

Logitech TypeAway Keyboard Ultra Slim Folding Kybrd for Palm Review

Logitech TypeAway Keyboard Ultra Slim Folding Kybrd for Palm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I basically like this little keyboard because of its portability, price, and feel. It's small enough to fit in my pocket and very cool to use. You have to remember to fold down the small brackets in front of the keyboard. The keys have a nice feel to them. My only criticism is that it is not quite a full size keyboard. Though the keys are full size themselves, the spacing between the keys is not quite like a full size keyboard. However for my purposes, light typing, a short report, or a letter, it's fine. I hotsync my documents to my computer, save, and print them out with "Documents to Go," and there you are.
An addendum: You have to make sure your hands have the proper support and the proper angle when typing or else you'll wind up with tingling hands and possible pain. You have to take breaks, stretch your hands, type for a short while, etc.

The Targus Stowaway portable keyboard for Handspring Visor enables you to quickly and comfortably enter text into your handheld without having to carry around a full-size desktop keyboard. The Stowaway keyboard is a full-size keyboard when open but folds instantly to about the size of your Visor. This portable keyboard has the same key spacing as a standard desktop keyboard so it's comfortable to use. Plus, at only 7.9 ounces it won't weigh you down.
This Stowaway keyboard is compatible with Handspring Visor handhelds running Palm OS v3.1 or later, including Visor Pro, Neo, Prism, Deluxe, and Platinum. It is not compatible with Handspring Visor Edge handhelds or the Handspring Treo series. (See the Stowaway portable keyboard model for Visor Edge.)
Installation of the Keyboard application onto your Handspring Visor is easily accomplished during a typical HotSync. (To prepare the app for HotSync, simply add it to Install Tool on Windows, or Install Handheld Files in the Mac HotSync Manager.) Because the keyboard only needs power while it is actually being used, the effect on the overall battery life of your Visor will be minimal.
To operate the keyboard with your handheld, click the Stowaway keyboard open from its folded position, lay it flat, and slide the keyboard parts together (it's separated into thirds for folding). Then, simply attach your handheld and start typing in a text-based program.
You can do virtually all your work without taking your fingers off the keyboard with the Stowaway. The four custom keys on the right side of the keyboard (Date Book, Address, To Do List, and Memo Pad) are preprogrammed shortcut keys to activate certain applications, but they can be customized with the Keyboard application.
Placing the keyboard on a firm, flat surface offers the best results, because of the folding design. However, you can use it on your lap as long as the keyboard is supported by a magazine or book across its open expanse. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

HP/Compaq PA840U Stowaway Portable Keyboard for HP/Compaq Review

HP/Compaq PA840U Stowaway Portable Keyboard for HP/Compaq
Average Reviews:

The Targus Stowaway Keyboard makes it easy when using some of the best features of the iPAQ, such as MSWord. If you think that the excitement stops there, your wrong. This nifty keyboard fits right in your pocket and is as small, if not smaller than the iPAQ. Its built in application buttons, and programable buttons make it 10 times easier to navigate the iPAQ, but don't worry, if you ever get lost in your own little iPAQ world, just hit the TODAY button on your keyboard and your right back home. Although it is a little hard to connect when the CF slot is attached, it can be done, and in no way affects its performance. I would recommend this product to anyone who owns an iPAQ and for its farely low price of ... it's well worth the value.

Belkin F8U1500 IR Universal Wireless Keyboard Review

Belkin F8U1500 IR Universal Wireless Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using pda's for 6 years and most people use them because they aren't sitting at a desk.My current one is the Ipaq 2210/2215 (love it). My first pda was the palm vIIx and I had their portable keyboard. The pda had to attach to it, but it always worked - every key! Great for the hotel stay or any desk.
With this Belkin unit you first have to update your driver (go to the Belkin website). You may have to uninstall other keyboard software first. Some PDA's have the ability to turn the screen sideways in Word or Excel which is good. Mine doesn't and the only way to get it to line up is to sit my pda in the FLIMSY holder UPSIDE down. Trying to line up your pda to the infrared using the adjustable metal shield is difficult. Even when I turned my pda upside down half the keys wouldn't work. If you wasted enough time reading this then I may have saved you $$$ and headache. I won't even offer to sell mine.

Palm 3169WW Universal Wireless Keyboard Review

Palm 3169WW Universal Wireless Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Palm Wireless Keyboard makes life easier for me. My information/Review is based on my own experience with this keyboard.
Installation: Put the disc in, follow instruction, perform hot sync, and wala! I'm done in 3 minutes. I don't know why others have problem with this.
How to use the keyboard: You have to turn the keyboard on FROM the PDA. On my Palm T|X, I go to the keyboard shortcut and turn it on. Maybe that's why others are having problem. It is not a plug and play type keyboard. You have to turn it ON from the PDA before you can use it. And by the way, your PDA has to be in place and align with the keyboard's IR to turn it on.
Design: C'mon, it's a black keyboard. How different is that from the other keyboards? You're supposed to use this keyboard to make life easier, not to compete in a "who has the prettiest keyboard" competition. The design is no different from a laptop keyboard. I can agree with others that this is not an easy keyboard to use if you are on a meeting trying to type everything. I can type 60+ words per minute on a regular keyboard but maybe 30+ on this keyboard only because I'm not used to it. But if I'm on my own pace I don't even notice.
Stability: I don't have any stability issues with this keyboard. I used this bad boy on the plane, train, school, ship, bus and at home and I never had any stability issues. Unless you are running or experiencing an earthquake, then yeah, stability would be an issue. And remember, this is a PORTABLE KEYBOARD; it folds so you can carry it with you.
Battery: two AAA batteries lasted me 3 months. Not bad at all. No complaints there. And yes, I use this keyboard at least 5 hours a week when I'm in the US and about 7 hours if I'm overseas.
Overall: It gets the job done for me. I can do my assignments, chat with my daughter, surf the web, check and send emails, calculate numbers and use PowerPoint with it. Don't be intimidated by other reviews. Find out for yourself. I'm glad I did and life just got a lot easier when using my T|X. I hope my experience can help you with your decision. Trust me, you won't regret buying this keyboard.

iGo Stowaway Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard for PDAs and Handhelds Review

iGo Stowaway Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard for PDAs and Handhelds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third keyboard that I've purchased for my PDA (Axim X50v) and I'm thrilled with the quality and performance of this keyboard. I highly recommend this product to anyone considering a keyboard.
I first bought a Belkin IR keyboard from Office Dept and it sucked. It felt cheap. The keys were poorly spaced and I couldn't get it to work with my Axim X50v. But in reality the biggest problem was the cheapness of the keyboard. I paid $60 for the keyboard and felt that I should have paid $20. Piece of crap. Decided to return it within 5 minutes of opening the box.
The second keyboard I bought was the "Dell Axim X50V Portable / Foldable / Full Size Bluetooth Keyboard" from Suntekstore / Amazon. This keyboard sucked for several reasons. First off, while it may have number keys (unlike this keyboard) the keys are all undersized so I couldn't type with them. Not a good start. Second problem is that the keyboard was made for cell phones, NOT PDA's! I couldn't put my Axim on the stand without it falling over or leaning at an unacceptable level toward the ceiling. Total crap. And the third problem was that I couldn't get it to connect to my PDA. I'm sure i could've figured out the third problem but the keyboard sucked so bad I made the decision to return it after an hour of opening the box.
Then I ordered the Think Outside keyboard...
This keyboard is head over heals better than the other keyboards that I just mentioned. The keys feel nice and they are well spaced. Opening the unit was a little stiff at first, but now slides open and closed easily with a satisfying "click" at either end of the process. The Axim fits PERFECTLY into the cradle that is built into the unit (I use the Axim in landscape position). I was also able to get this keyboard to work in about 30 minutes. Not plug and play, but reasonable. The keyboard sacrificed the number keys to make room for the larger key spacing, but I haven't found that it's a problem to type numbers by holding down the function keys. The best thing about this keyboard however is the quality. I paid $90 for it and I'd do it again in a second.
BTW, for those of you who are trying to figure out if the extra money for bluetooth is worth it, it is! I keep my PDA in its cradle by my computer charging when I'm at my desk. At any time I can flip open my keyboard and start typing notes without ever removing the PDA from its cradle. It's very convenient!
I've owned the keyboard for about a week and I'm very thrilled with the quality and performance it. It's a joy to use and easily doubles the usefulnexx of my PDA
