Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 - Metallic Black (63A-00001) Review

It's an ok mouse, but for the performance/ built quality definitely overpriced. My experience with Microsoft products has always been positive so this mouse was a bit of a disappointment. The right silver button is a somewhat awkward and feels stickier than the left one. The scroll button is too loose on the right/ left clicks and way to hard to press down which makes it difficult to use it in the pan mode. And I could really use more buttons. Another source of frustration is the polished finished on the top surface - after a while the standard right and left buttons feel oily from my fingerprints.
Conclusion: while an ok-ish mouse, not the best one around.
*** UPDATE ***
ok, i've used it for a couple of months now. i fixed the slippery top by (carefully) roughing it with sand paper. i was reluctant to do it, but for me performance/ feel is more important than shiny looks. it feels much better now. i got used to the right side button now, but the design is definitely awkward.
All be told: this mouse is still a huge improvement over your regular wired mouse. the side buttons i use for copy/ paste and are extremely helpful - for those guys working a lot with spreadsheets this mouse (or similar with programmable buttons) is a must.
Yes, a great mouse, but with a lot of room for improvement.

As a computer navi tool, the mouse has no peer in its simplicity and ease-of-use, but no matter how good something is, there's always room for improvement. Lasers, rather than a physical ball or optics, achieves pinpoint accuracy, giving you the finesse you need in fast-paced gaming, detailed photo manipulation and more. The scroll wheel has a tilt feature to make side-to-side scrolling just as easy as standard vertical scrolling. To read the fine print and see the intricacies of a digital photo, the Magnifier button is incredibly useful, acting like a magnifying glass held up to your monitor. 5 Customizable Buttons PC & Mac Compatible PC Operating System Requirements - Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 SP4 or higher Mac Operating System Requirements - Mac OS X v10.2-10.4.x (excluding Mac OS X v10.0-10.1) Requires a USB port for wireless transmitter

Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 Review

I had been searching high and low for an inexpensive, wireless, Mac-compatible, 5 customizable button mouse with 4-way scrolling to replace an older wired Microsoft mouse that fit the bill. I stumbled across this mouse by accident in a big box store, and thought it might be what I needed. But I was immediately bamboozled by the odd packaging that doesn't list any features but the BlueTrack technology. (Gee, that's great that I can use it on carpet or granite, but I think I'll just stick to a mousepad, thanks.)
Not even a mention of it having 5 customizable buttons or 4-way scrolling. I could only assume. Reading the product description here, again, one is left to guess.
Thankfully, a super-helpful clerk in the store allowed me to open the package and test the mouse- and yes, indeed it DOES have 4-way scrolling and 5 customizable buttons. In various programs like Photoshop, and Final Cut Pro it's always been very important to me to have those extra buttons that I can assign oft-used functions to.
Just thought I'd point this out for anyone else who might be wondering about this mouse's full feature set and getting no answers from the oddly lacking product descriptions that abound.
Since buying this, I've found this mouse a joy to use. It feels pretty good in my hand (I have large hands) I've used it now for a few weeks of 8-hour work days (video editing) and found it very comfortable. The accuracy is very good, making it a good fit for everything from standard PC use, to photo and video editing.
And yes, the 5-buttons work great. The two buttons on either side don't get in the way during normal use as generally you'll be grasping the mouse just below them, but either can be clicked with just a gesture, making them good for assigning oft-used functions in your favorite applications. The scroll wheel is a user-programmable button as well. Be sure to install the Microsoft IntelliPoint software for Mac or PC to take advantage of all the features and button customization. It's invaluable to me that IntelliPoint allows you to assign global settings or application-specific settings.
I highly recommend this mouse for people with larger hands, in need of an accurate (yet inexpensive) mouse with a pretty full feature set.

Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 Mac/Windows Review

Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 Mac/Windows

I have been using this mouse for almost a month now and I am very satisfied with it. It is smaller than most mice, but fits snuggly in my hand, considering that I have big hands. It is very responsive (sometimes too responsive) and the back button and mouse wheel complement its functionality. The battery indicator is another great plus, cause at least you can get a warning when you are running low; although it is very energy-efficient, I'm still using the packed standard AAA batteries with an average of 6-7 hours of daily use. And the power switch is also great for saving energy.
To sum up, Pros:
- Excellent Microsoft design (esthetical, ergonomical)
- Great price
- Very responsive (it's laser, not optical)
- Great battery life (I'll let you know on the comments when the first pair of batteries run out. I already have a rechargeable pair on stand-by).
- Instant pairing with bluetooth enabled PC's (I did not try it on a Mac)
- Back button functionality
- Power switch lets you turn it off when not in use to save battery, and you just turn it on and in a couple of seconds it reconnects (this has been a life-saver since I walk away from my desk very often, and I would not like that some envious co-worker "borrowed" it for his home, and it fits quite nicely on my shirt or pants pocket)
- It glides very smoothly on almost any surface (even on my bed sheets)
- It comes with a nice carry-bag.
Cons:
- It has dropped the connection about 5 or 6 times during the time I have been using it, but it reconnects after turning on and off again. Kind of annoying.
- I wish it had a forward buttong as well.
- It is somethimes too responsive, depending on the surface you wear it on. I fixed this by tweaking the mouse sensitivity on the Windows mouse settings.
I recommend this bluetooth mouse.
UPDATE (2/23/08): Well, the battery indicator is going red now (3 months after I started using it), but, if I could, I would downgrade my rating to 3 stars because of the following: The power switch broke like a week ago (the damn thing kinda got loose of it's place and still moves, but it doesn't change the power state). I tried going DIY and tried fixing it myself, but ended up getting it worse, although I managed the leave the power on. This means poor craftsmanship from Microsoft, because I consider I did not misused the mouse. I now can't turn the mouse off, so I have to remove the batteries every time I don't use it. This resulted on casting the mouse aside and leaving it just for special occasions (long meetings or surfing @ home).
I still consider the mouse is good, but this has negatively changed my opinion on Microsoft hardware (don't even get me started on their SW).
