It was right before Christmas when I bought this laptop and what caught my eye was the price considering everything you get for the price.
First of all the screen is a whopping 17.3 inch widescreen with an awsome color display. On top of the display is an integrated webcam with microphone which I have used from time to time without any problems. Just below the unit are the controls for power, sound, media controls and WIFI. The only button really is the power all of the other buttons are touch sensitive. Just below this you will find the speakers which are decent however the quality could be better but I am satisified for what I do with this laptop. Below the speakers is the full keyboard with numeric keypad just to the right and below this is the touch mouse pad. On the back of the monitor you will find a lighted HP logo and just below that you will find the removable battery.
On the left side of the laptop you will find the following ports...
External Video Connector
HDMI Connector
RJ 45Ethernet port (10/100)
eSATA Connector
2 USB Ports
A notebook expansion Port (which holds the remote for controlling the CD and windows media)
A integrated SD-MS/ProMMC/XD Reader
On the right side of the laptop you will find the following ports...
Power Connection
Locking mechanism
RJ11 Modem port
2 USB ports
Blu-Ray DVD Drive & Burner
On the front of the display you will find indication lights for the power, battery and hard drive and connections for connecting external headphone and a microphone.
After I purchase my unit I upgraded some of the components and actually replaced the 500GB hard drive with two 250 solid state drive which reduced the weight and temperature just a bit but the drives allows Windows to boot now in less that 15 seconds! I also upgraded the memory to 8GB and Windows 7 from the Home version to the Ultimate version.
This laptop works great for what I do which is studying (why I chose the large display), Internet & email, music, visual studio programming and from time to time I will watch a movie. I have not had any problems with the unit since I bought it, to me it does just what I need.
This is a very big laptop and you may have some challenges with weight, heat and finding an adequate bag to carry everything in and because I do significate traveling I wanted something close to what I have at home and this is very close and allows me to work, study or play very comfortly.
Remember laptops tend to be items where personal values dictate your needs so this may not be the unit for you. Also because these are mechanical devices you can experience problems while others do not so I always recommend dealing with a company that will stand behind their product.
Would I recommend you purchase this laptop? No, this is a decision that you must make.

The Dell Latitude E6400 is a great performer and a solid replacement for the Dell Latitude D630. It seems to be built well enough to be thrown around in day-to-day use, and it's clear that Dell is trying to improve the Latitude line and offer compelling features ... like 19-hour battery life.
I really couldn't find any major reason to dislike the E6400, but there are a number of "minor annoyances" that could make some businesses look elsewhere. Although the E6400 proved to be quite durable during several weeks of use, the alloy chassis is thin in some locations which makes the notebook "feel" less durable than it actually is. I'm certain the thinner alloy sections where used in order to keep weight as low as possible, but flex is something you don't want to see in a business notebook.
Overall, corporate clients who are looking for the next generation of business notebooks from Dell have plenty of reasons to buy the E6400. Dell made every effort to improve the Latitude family, and the E6400 is a great 14-inch business notebook. That said, there is some pretty strong competition such as the Lenovo ThinkPad T400 and HP EliteBook 6930p ... and those notebooks might prove to be better alternatives for some.
Pros:
* Very tough structure and rugged overall chassis design
* Excellent selection of ports and fantastic docking station
* Excellent battery life ... particularly with extra battery slice
* Solid performance
* Remains very cool where your body comes into contact with it
Cons:
* Industrial design (although cool) looks a little "unfinished"
* Build quality is durable, but alloy chassis feels thin in some spots
* ControlPoint software can be frustrating
* Trackpoint/touchpoint is better than the one on the D630, but still not great

Sony VAIO VPCF122FX/B Laptop Computer Review

Sony VAIO VPCF122FX/B Laptop Computer
Average Reviews:

I'm giving this one 3 stars. I don't see the big speed improvement when compared to my 2 year old Dell. Then again, I haven't tried any games that would take advantage of the 1G video card or heavy processor intensive work. I mainly use it for everyday use like email, MS Office, browsing, running a web site, etc.
Things I don't like:
- Keyboard: It takes getting use to. Typing on the raised keys is defintly diffenent then the conventional keyboards.
- Hard drive: Not the fastest at 5400rpm. I might upgrade to either with a SSD or a 7200rpm HD. Also, you can hear the HD spinning, reading and writing under the keyboard. Clicking sounds are a little annoying.
- Memory: Only comes with 4G when it could support max of 8G. Comes with 2x2G and if you need to upgrade, you need to pull out the existing memory. It's a waste of money.
- Weight: Little on the heavy side.
- Comes with a Blu-Ray reader and not a Blu-Ray burner
- Bloatware: :Added Value" or not, I've uninstalled tons of unwanted software.
- Back-lit keyboard (goes off after few seconds. Can't leave it on all the time)Things I like:
- Large screen, 16.4"
- Ease of making backup media in case the hard drive crashes. You'll need 3 DVDs.
- Back-lit keyboard (makes it easier to see the letters in the dimmly lit room)
- Price; I got mine really cheap as I bought it as an opened box and it was a previously retuned item.Bottomline: Not a bad machine; I wouldn't have bought it for the full price;

Emachines D620-5777 Notebook Computer Review

Emachines D620-5777 Notebook Computer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to say that I like this little laptop. I got mine for $369 at Office Depot. At a "netbook" price I have a real laptop. That means I have a 14" screen (not 7-10"), a full size keyboard (not a tiny one) and a CD/DVD burner (not available on netbooks). In addition, it came with Vista Basic which is less of a resource hog than Vista Premium and a number of useful programs like Microsoft Works, NTI burning and backup software and Google Desktop. My computer came with 2 GB RAM.
I find the performance to be more than adequate for routine tasks and much speedier than netbooks that I have used. With a real sized keyboard I feel that this computer could handle real tasks like typing a 10-20 page paper. There is more than enough power to do those things that the typical user would want, like some simple photo editing.
Obviously this is a bargain laptop so you can't expect the same features that you would get in a $1000 computer. You won't find a webcam or even a SD card reader but you can certainly add those via USB if needed. Speaking of USB, you only get 2 ports as opposed to the usual 3 and don't expect anything fancy like an HDMI or external SATA port.
Will this computer:
Run MS Office? Yes
Run a simple photo editor? Yes
Run Adobe Photoshop? Probably not too well
Run Print Shop? Yes
Run Adobe Illustrator? Probably not too well
Edit a short You Tube video using MS Moviemaker? Yes
Edit a long HD movie using Adobe Premier? Probably not
Play simple 2D games? Yes
Play complex, high action 3D games? Probably not
Use a web cam for Skype? Yes, but you will need to supply your own USB camera
Read flash cards? Yes, but you will have to buy a cheap USB card reader
All in all I think the folks at eMachine thought long and hard to create a useable machine at the lowest price point. In my opinion they succeeded. If you want a super powered gamer in a fashion color look elsewhere. If you need a basic machine that is bigger but also more user friendly than a netbook check out the eMachine.

I researched for 6 months before choosing this IBM. Great value, solid notebook. Love the keyboard and the access IBM help. I have called tech support for information and help with software installations and driver updates and they were very good and patient with all my detailed questions. This is important to me... to have good tech support available. This T41 comes with a 3 year warranty.
IBM's website has excellent support. I love the automated stuff where it analyzes your computer and tells you what updates you need. Sometimes their driver upgrades are more for the IT person. But, just download their software installer and it works great. However, you must focus...if you want to understand what you have downloaded. Not totally for the novice. Tech support walked me thru it once and I was on my way.
So far so good after only a month, the T41 rocks! Particularly the higher-end graphics card, glad I went for that. I can tell the difference when comparing with my desktop LCD.
The CD burner works well and I use Nero 6. I had been using a 4x burner on my desktop and this one writes at 24x...what a difference.
If you are contemplating a notebook, consider this one. Pay the extra bucks and go with IBM...very glad I did!

No matter how specific your requirements, chances are IBM has a ready-made mobile computer to cover them. For those users who appreciate lightweight portability and battery efficiency more than overwhelming power, the ThinkPad T41 (2379DJU) Notebook PC is a solid choice. You won’t want to use it in demanding business environments or as a 3D gaming rig, but the ThinkPad T41 (2379DJU) will otherwise fit quite nicely in most personal or light-duty professional situations. It’s also relatively inexpensive in comparison with the majority of IBM notebooks, and that should make any computer buyer happy.
Driven by a 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium-M processor with Intel’s new Centrino technology (Centrino processors offer improved battery life and more power than similarly rated non-Centrino CPUs), the ThinkPad T41 (2379DJU) is fast and easy on the batteries. The unit is equipped with a minimal 256 MB of 333 MHz main memory, which can be doubled or quadrupled for improved general and multitasking performance. Its graphics controller, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 with 32 MB of dedicated video memory, helps power the unit through midlevel 3D applications and games but won’t deliver smooth frame rates when asked to operate today’s newest high-end 3D games and 3D design apps.
Tipping the scales at a scant 4.9 lbs. and measuring just 12.2 by 10.0 by 1.0 inches, the ThinkPad T41 (2379DJU) is exceptionally easy to transport and operate. IBM has equipped the system with an average-sized 40 GB hard disk for file and program storage, a CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can listen to and burn audio CDs and watch DVD movies, and a 14.1-inch TFT display screen capable of super detailed 1400 by 1050 resolutions. DVD writing is not supported.
The ThinkPad T41 (2379DJU) is home to many unique and practical perks, including a nifty keyboard-illuminating ThinkLight for low-light situations, an S-Video out port, two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals, and a full-size keyboard featuring IBM’s user-friendly ThinkPad UltraNav multi-pointing system. An IEEE 1394 FireWire connection, typically used for downloading data from digital camcorders, is not part of the package.
Communication options are excellent. The unit sports a low-speed 56K fax/modem, a super-fast Intel/PRO 1000 Gigabit Ethernet Ethernet connector for incrementally faster network access than traditional LAN technology, and Intel PRO wireless for those times when you can’t plug in. Battery life is estimated at an admirable 4.4 hours under ideal conditions.

Gateway SX2802-03 Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

Gateway SX2802-03 Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
-Quiet
-Fast boot up into Win7
-Plenty of RAM for OS Requirements
-Plenty Big Hard Drive for anything
-Does not include a ton of worthless software
Cons:
-On board integrated graphics
-Button to eject DVD tray must be pressed HARD
-Does not include hard copies of OS or system recovery disks (these must be burned at your $$)
It is a nice quiet compact system. Boot time is noticeably faster (about a minute) over my previous Vista computers. Moreover, there is not a lot of preinstalled worthless junk ware. Although, the optional software (MS Office, Norton, etc) that is there are trail versions only. There is not any good tactile feel to the DVD eject button and must be pressed rather hard. I was very surprised to find no hard copies of Windows 7 or any recovery disks. For these, the system prompted me to insert my own DVDs and burn copies on my own (something EVERYONE SHOULD DO). The on-board integrated video is the weakest link in performance.Windows performance score is 3.6 due to graphics. There is a PCI-expresssx16 slot open. I ordered a video card (which MUST be a LOW PROFILE card) and will update this review on how it affects performance. Over all so far it seems to be a solid computer and a good experience. Time will tell more!
Edit:
I received, installed and tested HIS H435F512HDLP Radeon HD 4350 HDMI Dual Link DVI (HDCP) 512MB (64 bit) DDR2 PCIe 16x 2.0 Low Profile Video Card Retail (RoHS)
It brought up my gaming graphics score from a 3.4 to a 5.8! You may have to fiddle around with Aero and tone down some of the bells and whistles to gain improvements within windows 7 environment. Also this card has a fan. The fan adds a little more air flow within the case but also adds noticeable fan noise. So to maintain the stealthy quiet of the original system...get a card with no fan.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J/S 15.5-Inch Laptop - Silver Review

Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J/S 15.5-Inch Laptop - Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice looking laptop and I like the design.
As for speed and performance, it's a lot faster than my old Dell so no complaints.
I'm motivated to review the touchpad here because - to be honest it's driving me crazy. It's not a smooth touchpad - you'll see from the photos that there is a slight texturing to it. I didn't think it would be a problem but my fingertips - no matter how light or hard I press - don't move smoothly over it in any direction but downwards. They catch and start-stop. It's so frustrating - I went back to the dealer and we tried cutting a plastic iPhone cover down to size and affixing it over the touchpad but it didn't stick very well. Sadly I'm contemplating returning it which would be such a shame.
I don't mind using a USB mouse but still - I encourage anyone thinking of going with this particular design to really give the touchpad a try. Maybe it's just me, but ... ugh.
